New shopping complex in Srinagar to rehabilitate displaced Kashmiri shopkeepers

Srinagar, Aug 22 (ANI): Shopkeepers who were displaced due to the construction of a flyover in the area look forward to better days as the Kashmir government rehabilitates them with a new shopping complex in Srinagar city, which promises to be one of the biggest shopping complexes of the valley. The complex was inaugurated by chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah. Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) and Jammu and Kashmir Project Construction Company (JKPCC) constructed the shopping complex to rehabilitate the shopkeepers who were displaced due to the construction of Jehangir Chowk- Rambagh expressway corridor. Decorated with the traditional Dajji Diwari (wooden work) look on the outer façade, the two- storey shopping complex at Jehangir Chowk which is estimated to cost Rs 50 crores(500 million), has a floor area of 1,42,000 square feet. The protesters, holding photographs of the prisoners, hoped for early release of people who have been arrested for protesting in the valley. Srinagar, Aug 18 (ANI): Visitors thronged Srinagar city in Jammu and Kashmir to see age old manuscripts written in different calligraphic styles put on display at an exhibition. A three-day exhibition, showcasing Quran, the Islamic holy book, written in fine calligraphy on various media attracted people. Copies on display ranged from ancient and medieval manuscripts to texts in the digital format. The exhibition was organised by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages department in a bid to aware the youths of valley regarding the religious asset. Srinagar, Aug 15 (ANI): Kashmir observed a complete shutdown on Friday as India celebrated its 68th Independence Day in a flourish of patriotic zeal and national enthusiasm. Shops remained closed and the traffic was off the roads. People preferred to stay inside their homes due to the shutdown and restrictions in some of the areas in Kashmir valley. Both the separatist factions of Kashmir's Hurriyat conference and the Jihad council had called for a shutdown across the valley. The roads were empty and only security personnel were seen patrolling the areas in the summer capital of Srinagar. Srinagar, Aug 11 (ANI): The US government has extended by one year the adverse travel advisory on Jammu and Kashmir citing militant attacks and violent public unrest in the disputed Himalayan region. The Himalayan region is one of the world's most militarised zones, with India deploying more than 1.3 million troops to quell the rebellion that triggered off in 1989. However, few foreign tourists visiting the valley said they had a good and positive experience and felt if the advisory is lifted, influx of tourists would increase. A tourist from Australia, Nathan, said there were negative things written about Kashmir on Australian travel advisory.
