Caparisoned elephants attract visitors to temple festival in Kerala

Thrissur, Feb 05 (ANI): Domestic and foreign tourists thronged Kerala state for annual temple festival to see caparisoned elephants and traditional colourful dance. The temple festival, 'Thaipooyam', was celebrated with religious pageantry at Koorkancherry Sree Maheswara Temple in Thrissur district amid drum beats and procession. Main attractions of the festival were decorated elephants and traditional dance, 'Kavadis', which enthralled the visitors. People of the region revelled in the celebrations as other temples and houses were also decorated. Thaipooyam festival is celebrated in the name of Lord Subrahmanya, son of Hindu god Shiva. On this day, special rituals are also organised. Another major attraction was 'Kavadiattam' or dancing with floral arrangements made on wooden frames. President Pranab Mukherjee in his message to Sri Lankan counterpart Maithripala Sirisena said India and Sri Lanka are close neighbours with a long standing relationship of friendship and cooperation based on shared linguistic, religious and cultural traditions. He also said that these ties have matured over time to embrace all areas of contemporary significance. Devotees take holy dip in Varanasi to mark 'Magh Purnima'

Varanasi, Feb 03 (ANI): Thousands of devotees took a dip at 'Sangam', the confluence of river Ganges, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati, in the holy city of Varanasi of Uttar Pradesh on the auspicious occasion of full moon day or Magh Purnima on Tuesday. Magh Purnima marks the last day of the month of Magh (January-February) in the Hindu calendar. Devout Hindus stated gathering at the river bank from early in the morning to perform religious rituals. They queued up before priests who had erected makeshift altars on the riverbanks to perform the rituals and offer prayers. Apart from taking a dip in the holy waters, devotees also donate food and clothes on this day. A devotee, Hiranand Pandey said that the tradition is being followed for years now. The month-long festival was marked in Allahabad city and was attended by over 25 lakh pilgrims. According to Hindu practice, a dip at the holy confluence breaks the cycle of rebirth. Feb 3, 2015
