India does not expect power tariff rise after coal mine auctions, says Coal Secretary

New Delhi/ Dhanbad, Nov 20 (ANI): The government does not expect power tariffs to rise after it auctions more than 200 coal blocks, Coal Secretary Anil Swarup has said. The Coal Ministry on Tuesday had released draft guidelines for allocation of 74 coal blocks. The due date for coal auction is February 11. The Ministry will compensate prior allottees unsuccessful in coal auction. Swarup said that the idea was to keep a lid on tariff rather than adopt a revenue maximisation approach. The reserve price would be determined before December 22, while the bidding fees will be based on geological reserves of coal mines. Nov 20, 2014

Kerala introduces water taxis to boost backwater tourism

Kochi, Nov 14 (ANI): The tourism minister of Kerala, AP Anil Kumar, launched water taxis and hop-on hop-off boat services to increase the potential of backwaters for state tourism. First of its kind in India, water taxis and boats were flagged off by Kumar in Kochi recently. As Kerala is surrounded by waterways, the services have been launched with the view to ensure the “last-mile connectivity” to tourist destinations, and lure more and more tourists to Kerala backwaters. The hop-on and hop-off boats are air conditioned with seating accommodation for 25 passengers at a time and they will ply at regular intervals. One buying a day’s ticket can travel in it for any number of times within 24 hours. The passenger can get into the boat from any boat jetty and can step down at whichever destination he wants where the boat travels. Besides having a new experience one can also avoid road traffic congestion. Nov 14, 2014

PM Modi to visit Australia this week for G-20 summit

New Delhi, Nov 11 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit Australia from November 16-18 for G-20 summit later this week, said foreign ministry official. India wants to keep a so-called 'peace clause' that protects its huge state food purchases until the World Trade Organization can strike a definitive deal on stockpiling. As originally envisaged in Bali, the clause would expire in four years. India’s foreign ministry official Anil Wadhwa said Modi`s visit to Australia would improve and strengthen relations between the two countries. India would also discuss contours of an agreement between US, Japan, India and Australia to check Chinese influence in the region. The Prime Minister will hold delegation-level talks with his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott, and will address the Parliament in Canberra. He will have political-business community meetings in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. The Prime Minister will also participate in the G-20 Summit in Australia, following which he shall travel to Fiji after a gap of 33 years. Modi will also visit Myanmar before his visit to Australia and Fiji. Nov 11, 2014
