Kashmir witnesses sanitation drives after flood waters recede

Srinagar, Oct 03 (ANI): The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, has been witnessing frequent cleanliness and sanitation drives ever since the flood waters receded in the city, where more than one million people reside. Emergency workers have been battling to prevent waterborne diseases like cholera from spreading as fetid water swilled around the Kashmir valley after the worst flooding in more than a century. Sanitation and cleanliness drives have swung into motion as the waters recede after a month of heavy flooding. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has deployed tippers, robotic arms and excavators, among other machinery alongside hundreds of staff members who have been cleaning roads and garbage non-stop. The Municipal Commissioner, GN Qasba, said that a record 22,000 metric tonnes of garbage had been extracted from the city after the floods. Passengers relieved as train services resume in Kashmir

Baramulla/ Jammu, Sep 29 (ANI): Bringing much relief to the passengers, train services on the Baramulla-Banihal railway track resumed on Monday (September 29) after remaining closed for many days due to floods in Jammu and Kashmir. Train services were badly affected due to worst flooding in the valley. Besides claiming hundreds of lives and inundating thousands of homes, the flood destroyed military bases and hospitals in main city Srinagar after the Jhelum River overflowed its banks. Now with the train services resuming, passengers said it would also help boost their business, making it easier to commute. Meanwhile, the fourth bridge on the River Tawi was also reopened on Monday. After floods washed away the entire Jammu region, several bridges and connecting roads were closed. New Delhi, Sep 29 (ANI): Journalist-turned-writer Yishey Doma Bhutia from Sikkim is one of four selected participants living at Rashtrapati Bhawan as a part of its in-residence programme for writers and artists. The young writer has to her credit a number of books like Legends of the Lepchas: Folktales from Sikkim and Sikkim: the Hidden Fruitful Valley. She has received the Sikkim Sahitya Samman for the year 2013. She believes that such programmes are a big encouragement for young writers like her. The In-residence programme for writers and artists was launched by the president in December last year. Besides Bhutia, the present batch comprises - Dr Vempalli Gangadhar, a Telugu writer and artists Pratap Morey from Mumbai and Rahul Saxena from Chennai. A leading daily quoted a source close to the actor as saying, "Given that Salman does a lot of charity and he runs the NGO Being Human, it's not surprising that he has stepped up for a noble cause. What happened in Jammu and Kashmir was a big natural disaster and he wanted to lend a helping hand." This is not the first time when the actor came forward to fulfill his social responsibility. All the shops in the downtown area commercial hub of Lal Chowk, where the famed clock tower stands in the middle of putrid water, which used to be hustling and bustling with business activities, now bears a deserted look as the markets have been completely damaged. Poonch /Shimla, Sept 25 (ANI): Apple trade in Jammu and Kashmir, which had hit a slump during the floods, restarted after the reconstruction of a major road which had been left damaged because of the heavy rainfall. The arterial Mughal Road in Kashmir, which connects the mountainous valley with the foothills of the state, was rendered inaccessible following landslides caused by the recent heavy rainfall but has now been reconstructed and thrown open to traffic. The worst flooding in over a century had hampered the trade of Kashmiri apple, which is known world over for its taste and juice. Kashmiri apples, whose price generally wavers around rupees 100 per kilogram, are now being sold for rupees 20 per kilogram. Trucks carrying flood relief material halted near border check post in Kashmir

Kathua, Sept 24 (ANI): Government authorities in Jammu and Kashmir stopped nearly 45 trucks loaded with relief material for flood victims from entering inside the valley at the border. Trucks carrying food items, utensils, blankets, medicines and more were stopped at Lakhanpur in Kathua district – the gateway to Jammu and Kashmir – by the Toll Posts of Excise Department and the Sales Tax Department due to incomplete formalities. The trucks belonged to Shri Amarnath Sewa Mandal of Patiala, an organization that works to help the poor, old and unprivileged people and is also devoted to help people undertaking the pilgrimage to sacred shrine of Amarnath.
