Kangra, Feb 13 (ANI): Two medical students have been tested positive for swine flu in Himachal Pradesh. This comes after a woman was diagnosed with the deadly HINI virus earlier this week at Doctor Rajender Prasad Government Medical College (DRPGMC). The two people who have fallen prey to the disease are students at DRPGMC. They have been shifted to isolated wards for treatment. Medical Superintendent of DRPGMC, Dinesh Sood, said masks have been distributed among students and staff members as a precautionary measure. Swine flu has killed 191 people in the country in January alone, with the newly formed Telangana state being worst hit. So far, 2,038 people have been afflicted by the virus in India, according to media reports. At least 58 swine flu deaths have been reported in northwestern state of Rajasthan. Feb 13, 2015

Oldest elephant 'Maheshwari' dies in Thiruvananthapuram zoo

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 10 (ANI): An 85-year-old elephant, Maheshwari died in a zoo in Thiruvananthapuram city of Kerala. Maheshwari was the oldest inmate of the zoo. A couple of days back, a frail Maheshwari had collapsed after a bath and could not stand on her own since then. The zoo authorities tried lifting her up with a crane but all efforts went in vain. Surgeon at the zoo, Doctor Jacob Alexander said that Maheshwari breathed her last at 10.45 a.m. Zoo officials paid last respects to Maheshwari, who was also accorded with a proper funeral and complete last rites. Pollachi, Feb 07 (ANI): A cattle fair held to spread awareness among people about the preservation of livestock drew enthusiastic response from villagers in Tamil Nadu. The fair, held at Samathur on the outskirts of Pollachi town in Coimbatore district, also drew animal lovers from abroad. Villagers dressed in traditional attire brought hundreds of cows and bulls of different breeds at the fair ground. A member of Vanavarayar Foundation, which organised the event, Shankar Vanavarayar said the idea was to create awareness about the importance of livestock in agriculture. Raipur, Feb 03 (ANI): Residents of Raipur in Chhattisgarh state are likely to breathe a sigh of relief as city municipal body began a sterilisation drive to put an end to the menace of stray dogs. The drive aims to sterilise around 2000 stray dogs in the region. It was undertaken after a few people fell prey to dog bites. City Mayor, Pramod Dubey, is hopeful that the efforts taken by the municipal body would bring some relief to locals. Meanwhile, veterinary doctor said that when the dogs are ravenous, they have tendency to bite and they prey on humans. India's first double hand transplant successful, say doctors

Kochi, Feb 01 (ANI): Doctors successfully conducted India's first double hand transplant on a train accident victim in Kochi city of Kerala. The surgery was conducted at Amrita Institute of Medical Science on 30-year-old Manu, who received the hands of a 24-year-old road accident victim. Over 20 surgeons conducted the surgery that took over 16 hours over January 12 and 13. At least 110 successful hand transplants have been conducted so far in countries like US, European countries, China and Australia, since the first one in France 13 years ago. The patient, Manu, expressed his delightfulness and was eager to get back to his daily chores. Head of the Plastic Surgery Department, Amrita Institute of Medical Science, Doctor Subramania Iyer, called it a major feat for Indian doctors. He further said that both the hands were accepted by the patient's body 14 days after the surgery. Swine flu claims 27 lives in Rajasthan

Jaipur/Ludhiana, Jan 28 (ANI): The Rajasthan government is making necessary arrangements after 27 swine flu deaths were reported from the state. Additional director of health department, Doctor KC Meena, said that 113 cases of swine flu were reported from 22 districts. Meena said that symptoms of swine flu were very much similar to ordinary viral or cold due to which people tend to adopt a lax approach towards the disease, which leads to delay in treatment causing deaths. Meanwhile, health minister of Rajasthan, Rajendra Rathore, said the state has adequate arrangements to deal with the flu. Meanwhile, Ludhiana city in Punjab has also recorded two cases of swine flu.
