San Diego Zoo burns $1m worth of illegal rhino horns

To make a stand against animal poaching and wildlife trafficking, San Diego Zoo burnt more than $1m worth of illegal rhino horns on 8 September. In the past storage compounds in other countries have been raided, so zoo staff decided the best way to ensure that the horns do not end up on the black market was to burn them. The ashes from the fire will be spread throughout Africa. The burn comes just before World Rhino Day on 22 September. Sep 9, 2016

Islamist hate preacher Anjem Choudary jailed

British hate preacher Anjem Choudary has been sentenced to five years and six months in solitary jail for supporting Islamic State. Choudary preached a hardline version of Islam for decades but avoided being arrested, that was until he published a YouTube video that supported IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadis claim to have established a Caliphate, or legitimate Islamic State, in June, 2014. The Saudi-led bombing campaign against Yemen and the UKs involvement

Theresa May has reportedly raised concerns over the situation in Yemen as Saudi Arabia continues its bombing campaign targeting Houthi rebels. But Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have documented more than 70 unlawful strikes, thousands of civilians have been killed and 80% of Yemen are in need of aid. The United Kingdom is the second biggest arms dealer in the world and has licensed £3.3 billion worth of arms to Saudi Arabia since the bombing began.With this evidence emerging there are increasing calls for Britain to stop selling arms to Saudi Arabia. Giant pandas are no longer endangered but eastern gorillas are

Thanks to an increase in available habitat, the population of the giant panda rose 17% from 2004 to 2014 and they are no longer considered endangered, and their status has been changed to vulnerable. The eastern gorilla however is now critically endangered. The shocking collapse of Grauer’s gorilla numbers is due to illegal hunting and civil unrest. The change in status means four of six great apes are critically endangered: the eastern gorilla, western gorilla, Bornean orangutan and Sumatran orangutan. Sep 5, 2016
