Residents of Islamabad vow to carry forward Malala's mission

Islamabad, Oct 15 (ANI): Dozens of rights activists and residents of Pakistani capital took to the streets of Islamabad recently with lighted torches and candles to pay tributes to their young Nobel laureate, Malala Yousafzai. Malala, the Pakistani teenager, who was shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012 for advocating girls' right to education won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize on October 10, along with Indian campaigner against child trafficking and labour Kailash Satyarthi. Yousafzai, aged 17, becomes the youngest Nobel Prize winner and 60-year-old Satyarthi the first Indian-born winner of the accolade. Chanting "Provide education for children, or leave your chairs", the crowd demanded that the government takes on girls' education on a war footing. Yousafzai was attacked in 2012 in a school bus in the Swat Valley of northwest Pakistan by masked gunmen as a punishment for a blog that she wrote for the BBC's Urdu service as an 11-year-old to campaign against the Taliban's efforts to deny women education. A similar example is seen at the shrine of Sufi saint Wali Dad in Bhathain village of Rajouri district, where devotes belonging to different religions gather and celebrate the Urs of the saint with much religious fervour. Every year, devotees in large numbers from Rajouri and other regions of Jammu and Kashmir valley gather at the foothills of Bhaithain village to pay homage to saint Wali Dad and seek his blessings. Hundreds of devotees led by the head of the former royal family participated in the week- long festival. During the festival, idols of the various Gods and Goddesses of the valley are brought out from respective temples in full public view. The festival, which symbolises the triumph of good over evil, is marked by prayers, processions and musical programmes. The week-long Kullu Dussehra festival ends with the sacrifice of a buffalo, a rooster, a lamb, a fish and a crab. Srinagar, Oct 05 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing subdued preparations for Eid this time due to the floods that devastated the state last month, leaving hundreds dead and thousands homeless. There is no rush in the markets or festivity to be seen. The animal traders in Srinagar city say this year they have less to offer for animal sacrifices as most of their livestock perished in the floods. The blockage of transport system due to damage to infrastructure has also marred their business. India would be observing Eid-al-Adha, one of the two most important festivals in the Islamic calendar, on Monday. It marks the end of an annual Haj or pilgrimage to Mecca.
