First phase of JandK assembly polls begin on Tuesday

Jammu and Kashmir, Nov 25 (ANI): The polling for the first phase in the Assembly Elections of Jammu and Kashmir began on Tuesday as people queued outside polling booths to caste their votes. About 400 companies of security forces have been deployed to ensure free and fair polls in the first phase of the assembly elections. Residents lined up outside the polling booths to exercise their franchise fighting the extreme cold weather as they hoped for better governance in the state. Of the 15 Assembly seats going to polls on Tuesday, 11 segments of Chenab valley and North Kashmir were highly militancy infested areas and some of them still have militant influx. A total of 10,502,50 voters, including 5,00,539 women, will decide the fate of 12 sitting MLAs, including seven ministers among 123 candidates at 1,900 polling stations in 15 constituencies. Srinagar, Nov 25 (ANI): Residents of the Jammu and Kashmir thronged markets to buy heaters and other equipments to keep themselves warm, as their houses left damp by the devastating floods that hit the state in September, are far colder this winter than in previous years. The main markets of Srinagar were full of people rushing to buying heaters. Crowd throngs wine festival in Nagpur

Nagpur, Nov 23 (ANI): The Nagpur Wine and Food Festival- 2014 being held in Nagpur not only promised a treat to a variety of wines presented by famous brands but also aimed at creating awareness to remove the misconceptions that people hold regarding the drink. The two- day festival has been organized by Nagpur Wine Lovers Club with the help of Indian Grapes Processing Board, All India Wine Manufacturing Association, Nasik Valley Wine Club and Indo-Israel Agricultural Organization. Eight famous wine brands of the country participated in the festival, out of which the wine from Nasik was the most popular and highly demanded. Vice President of Nagpur Wine Lovers Club, Sunil Manikikar, said that the aim of the festival is to promote wines. Bandipora, Nov 22 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday hit out at his opponents for demanding elections in the state in wake of massive floods. Abdullah alleged that central ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), opposition Congress party and state's main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), didn't care for distressed people. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands of villages were devastated by the worst flooding in decades in the Kashmir valley. Roads in Srinagar, Kashmir's main city, were transformed into stagnant canals strewn with wreckage, trash and dead animals. Meanwhile, Abdullah also replied to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's allegation that state government was enmeshed in corruption. Authorities begin dredging drive in River Jhelum in Kashmir

Srinagar, Nov 22 (ANI): The irrigation and flood control department in Jammu and Kashmir started a dredging drive in River Jhelum, which overflowed in September and flooded the region, killing hundreds and marooning villages. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands of villages were devastated by the worst flooding in decades in the Kashmir valley. Roads in Srinagar, Kashmir's main city, were transformed into stagnant canals strewn with wreckage, trash and dead animals. Hospitals were also flooded when the Jhelum River burst its banks and staff scattered around the city were unable to get to work. On Saturday chief engineer of irrigation and flood control department, Javed Jaffar, said that around 35000 cusecs of water also has to be discharged from the river during the dredging drive in order to widen and deepen it by desilting.
