Voting begins amidst tight security for second phase of J and K Assembly polls

Jammu and Kashmir, Dec 02 (ANI): People queued up at the polling stations as voting for the second phase of elections in 18 seats in Jammu and Kashmir began on Tuesday morning, amid tight security. Voters braved the cold weather to come out and cast their votes. One of them also urged people to come out and exercise their franchise and elect a good representative. The polling will seal the fate of several high-profile candidates including two former chief ministers, seven state ministers and a former separatist. Security has been stepped up to foil any attempts by militants to disrupt the democratic process in Jammu and Kashmir, which has witnessed the killing of a sarpanch in Shopian district the previous day. As many as 18 Assembly segments, spread over five districts -- two in the Valley and three in Jammu region are polling to decide the fate of 175 candidates. Dec 2, 2014

Pakistani refugees living in India's Kashmir face unemployment issue

Kathua, Dec 2 (ANI): Pakistani refugees living in Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday (December 01), say that they are facing the problem of unemployment, adding they would vote for an honest and people-friendly candidate in the ongoing assembly elections in the valley. Around 70,000 families are living in a refugee colony in Kathua district and complain of no jobs. A resident of the colony, Joginder Sharma, said that there must be special educational policy for refugee colonies and a coaching centre too. He also said that there should be reservation for refugees in schools and colleges as well. Another resident, Yash Pal, said that the Refugee colony needs to develop and they want a leader who is honest and would work for their cause. Followers of the faith flocked at Rajagiri Valley in Kerala to celebrate the public function. Pope Francis conferred sainthood on two Indians and four Italians on November 23, saying their "creative" commitment to assisting the poor had laid a path for others to follow. Security forces recover huge cache of arms and ammunitions in Kashmir

Doda, Nov 29 (ANI): Security forces recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday (November 29). The security forces busted a militant hideout from where an AK-47 rifle, 12 bore guns, grenades and ammunitions were recovered. Last week also Indian army had recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition in Kupwara and Baramulla districts of the state before the assembly elections began. Rajouri, Nov 29 (ANI): Snowfall in higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir slowed down traffic and hit visibility on the arterial Mughal Road that connects the valley with rest of the country. Snowfall in Pir ki Gali in Rajouri district dropped temperatures as the Meteorological Department, had predicted snowfall in the higher reaches of the state. Residents are worried that the continuous snowfall will block the Mughal road, which will affect businesses and tourist movement. The road brings Poonch and Rajouri district in the state closer to the summer capital, Srinagar in Kashmir valley. Rajouri, Nov 27 (ANI): A foot-over Bridge damaged in the floods that devastated the state of Jammu and Kashmir in September this year remains unrepaired, forcing villagers to cross the river flowing below at immense peril to their lives. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands of villages were devastated by the worst flooding in decades in the Kashmir valley. People risk their lives crossing the bridge by holding on to the steel ropes of the destroyed bridge. The villagers said that more than three months on, the bridge has not been repaired. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced 5.7 billion rupees in assistance for housing and 1.8 billion rupees to fix six major hospitals in the state that are in poor condition and need immediate federal support.
