Bhopal gas victims urge US President Obama for justice ahead of his India visit

Bhopal, Jan 24 (ANI): Victims of 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, world's worst industrial disaster, called upon US President Barack Obama to ensure justice for survivors by directing Dow Chemicals to appear for hearings and clean toxic waste. In the early hours of December 3, 1984, around 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas accidentally leaked from a pesticide factory owned by US multinational Union Carbide Corp. and was carried by the wind into the surrounding slums. Social activist Satinath Sarangi said they have called upon Obama and demanded extradition of John Macdonald, secretary of Union Carbide. Security experts say convergence with US on extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana unlikely

New Delhi, Dec 28 (ANI): Security experts on Sunday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would have to find a way to demand extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana from the US during President Barack Obama’s visit for Republic Day celebrations. Rana was arrested in Chicago by the FBI on October 18, 2009 for plotting an attack on Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, which ran cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in 2005, US authorities said in court documents. Security Expert Uday Bhaskar said that it was difficult to expect a convergence between Washington and New Delhi on militancy in relation to Pakistan. Lucknow, Dec 27 (ANI): Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday sought fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim's extradition after a tape claimed his presence in Karachi. Tapes broadcast by news website newsmobile.in alleged that Dawood, accused of being involved in 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai, was running and expanding his business empire from his hideout. India has claimed that Pakistan continues to provide safe haven to suspected Dawood Ibrahim to further its proxy war but Pakistan denies it. Social activists demand apology from America for Bhopal gas tragedy

Bhopal, Dec 1 (ANI): Social activists demanded immediate scientific assessment of environmental pollution caused by the Bhopal gas tragedy three decades back. Social activist Satinath Sarangi said that a scientific assessment of air, water and ground quality should be done to address the situation. Sarangi added that the waste should be removed and disposed of away from the area, and feel that authorities, who now own the site, have fumbled on taking action. Former Union Carbide Chief Warren Anderson dies at age of 92

New Delhi, Oct 31 (ANI): Former Union Carbide chairman Warren Anderson, who was wanted in connection with the December 1984 Bhopal gas leak case, died on September 29 at a nursing home in Vero Beach, Florida. He was 92 years of age. Anderson led Union Carbide when thousands were killed in a gas leak at its plant in India, which led to multiple calls for his extradition to India to face prosecution for his role. Anderson was arrested following the incident and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, grievous assault and killing and poisoning human beings and animals.
