Brazil: 46 inmates break out of prison in Natal

A total of 46 inmates escaped from a public prison in the northern Brazilian city of Natal early 12 January, in the largest single prison break in the history of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The inmates, the majority of which are held on charges of theft, escaped through a tunnel dug into the ground, which directors of the Raimundo Nonato prison said measured 131ft long. Jan 13, 2016

Police present recaptured Mexican drug lord El Chapo to media

Mexico recaptured the worlds top drug lord Joaquin El Chapo Guzman with US help after a pre-dawn shootout on 8 January, six months after he humiliated the government with his second jaw-dropping escape from a maximum security prison. Guzman, head of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, was presented to the media and bundled into a Marines helicopter in the evening, to be flown to the same prison from which he escaped. Jan 9, 2016
