LONDON The race to the Oscars got a little tighter with the presentation of the British Academy Film Awards, a precursor to Hollywood’s big night. ‘The Theory of Everything’s’ Eddie Redmayne took home the bronze Mask, beating out fellow Brit Benedict Cumberbatch for best actor. Julianne Moore continued her road to gold with a win for ‘Still Alice’ as did J.K. Award season hit full stride with the Screen Actors Guild and the Producers Guild honoring the best in their fields. LOS ANGELES At the SAG Awards, ‘The Theory of Everything’s’ Eddie Redmayne was the surprise winner over front-runner Michael Keaton while Julianne Moore took her third consecutive best actress award after winning the Golden Globe and Critics choice for her role in ‘Still Alice’. Supporting actors J.K. Simmons and Patricia Arquette each took home a statuette locking them as the odds on favorite to take home the Oscar. It was art house darlings that lead the way at the 87th Academy Awards nominations. ‘Birdman’ and ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ picked up nine nominations each including Best Picture and Best Director. While Michael Keaton received his first nod as Best Actor for ‘Birdman’, Meryl Streep picked up her 19th nomination for ‘Into The Woods’. J.K. Simmons, who just won the Golden Globe for ‘Whiplash’ is the front-runner in the Best Supporting Actor category but he’ll have stiff competition from fellow nominees Robert Duvall, Ethan Hawke, Edward Norton & Mark Ruffalo. Bradley Cooper nabbed a Best Actor nod, nudging out “Selma’s” David Oyelowo and “Nightcrawler’s” Jake Gyllenhaal. A notable snub for Best Actress was Jennifer Aniston for her much praised performance in ‘Cake’. However the category will be well represented with nods to Felicity Jones, Rosamund Pike, Reese Witherspoon & Julianne Moore. Hosted this year by Neil Patrick Harris, the award show will broadcast live on February 22nd. LONDON Fans braved the weather for the U.K. premiere of ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’. Star Colin Firth led the way down the red carpet along with fellow cast members Mark Strong, Taron Egerton and Sofia Boutella.
