Politicos react as JandK heads for Governor's rule after Omar decides to quit as Caretaker CM

New Delhi/ Jammu, Jan 09 (ANI): Political leaders on Friday react as Jammu and Kashmir heads for Governor's rule with incumbent NN Vohra sending a report to the Centre on the political impasse after Omar Abdullah asked him to relieve him as caretaker Chief Minister of the state. Omar Abdullah told him that the state needed a full-time administrator to deal with the situation along the border with Pakistan and providing relief to flood-affected people in the Kashmir valley. Reacting on the same, NC leader Davinder Singh Rana said that Abdullah has taken this decision in view of the larger interest of the people of the state. BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi said that since JandK got a fractured mandate, situation in the state is obvious. Congress leader Manish Tewari said that the governor's take on the issue would be ultimate decision. Meanwhile, NCP and CPI also called for early establishment of government in the valley. Army intensifies operation to hunt down tribal guerillas in Assam

Kokrajhar, Jan 04 (ANI): Combing operations against the tribal militant group National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) are going on in full swing along India-Bhutan border in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts of Assam. Army, police and paramilitary forces under the unified command structure are carrying out joint operations in the strong hold areas of tribal guerillas in the forest terrain. The massive patrolling along the India-Bhutan border areas has been intensified while the army is searching out militants hidden deep inside the Ripu and Chirang reserve forests in Kokrajhar and Aie-Valley division in Chirang district. The border in the two districts has also been sealed by the security forces as NDFB militants could sneak through border areas. Rajouri, Jan 01 (ANI): Four months since Jammu and Kashmir was ravaged by floods, the poor are still waiting for their share of compensation to rebuild their houses as the cold weather makes life difficult for them.Hundreds of people were killed and thousands of villages devastated by the worst flooding in decades in the Kashmir valley in September. A flood victim, Talib Sen, said the benefits of several schemes introduced by the government in the aftermath of the floods never reached them. Kashmir's famed Dal lake freezes as temperature dips

Srinagar, Jan 01 (ANI): Kashmir continues to reel under extreme weather conditions leading to freezing of several water bodies, including the famed Dal Lake. The dip in temperatures is due to snowfall in the Himalayas and has adversely impacted the upper half of the country. The cold wave has also forced people to stay indoors. People in Srinagar city, who work outdoors, were seen sitting around bonfire to fight the chill on Thursday (January 01). Local boatmen also found it difficult to row their boats through the frozen Dal Lake. The Valley is witnessing the 40-day harshest winter period, known as Chillai-Kalan, which began on December 21. But the state has not received much snowfall as compared to last year even though temperatures continue to remain below freezing point in the valley. Locals, specially the youth, are not complaining as they have more options now. The younger generation is busy lapping up the food being offered at fast food outlets like Chic King, Cafe Coffee Day and Pizza Hut etc. A young customer, Harris said that fast food joints are a good option to go to when one needs to grab a quick bite after school or college. The new food joints are also offering new opportunities of employment to the residents. Kashmir winter festival aims to attract tourists post devastating floods

Srinagar, Dec 31 (ANI): A three-day winter festival organized by the tourism department of Jammu and Kashmir is attracting people as the arrival of tourists to the state has picked up months after floods devastated the valley. Kashmir saw a major decrease in number of tourists after September deluge in which hundreds of people were killed and thousands of villages were destroyed. However, the tourism department is trying to regain what it lost with its winter event called 'Jashne Chilai-e-Kalan'. Chilai kalan is the coldest 40 day winter period in the northern state that starts from December 21. The Kashmir valley is witnessing intense cold wave with sub-zero temperatures. The purpose behind organizing this winter festival is to let people know that Jammu and Kashmir is back to normalcy.Various cultural activities are being held during the festival where dancers and musicians perform, comedy and folk theatre acts are showcased and people dress up as snowman to entertain the kids.
