Diwali celebrations: People light 51,000 lamps in Pune's Shaniwar Wada palace

Pune, Oct 21 (ANI): Pune illuminated the famed historic monument, Shaniwar Wada palace built in 1746, the seat of Peshwa rule, with 51,000 oil lamps to mark the beginning of festivities ahead of festival of lights, Diwali. The tradition dates back to the time of Maratha Empire and was stopped by the British during pre-independence period. Shaniwar Wada is a historic monument. Pune's Diwali festival starts from here. This tradition has been in practice since last 14 years but was stopped in 1818 by the British. A laughing club Chaitanya Hasya Yog Mandal (CHYM) in the year 2000 resumed this tradition. This lighting up of these numerous lamps marks the beginning of festivities of Diwali in Pune city. Director of Chaitanya Hasya Club Arun Pathak, said residents of Pune start the festivities with this lighting event of 'Deep Utsav' every year. Oct 21, 2014

PM Modi meets top military officers at Combined Commanders' Conference

New Delhi, Oct 17 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met top military officers at the defence ministry War Room at a time when tension continues along the border with both China and Pakistan. The Combined Commanders' Conference is the first meeting of the prime minister with all top commanders, including the three service chiefs. The three service chiefs are expected to give elaborate presentations to the prime minister on the security scenario. The Indian Air Force chief, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, will make the first presentation, followed by the Indian Navy Chief Admiral RK Dhowan and the Indian Army Chief General Dalbir Singh. Jammu, Oct 10 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited migrants displaced in the intensified cross-border firing between India and Pakistan as they sought shelter far from homes. A total of nine Pakistani and eight Indian civilians have been killed since fighting erupted more than a week ago along a 200-km (125-mile) stretch of border in the disputed region of Kashmir. Abdullah said that the government is trying its best to help the migrants. India's Defence Minister Arun Jaitley has accused Pakistan of making unprovoked attacks on Indian-controlled Kashmir and threatened heavy retaliation. While visiting migrants seeking shelter in a school in Kathua district in the city, Abdullah told mediapersons, that the migrants have demanded small one-room houses far from border areas to escape cross-border firing in future.
