Jammu-Pathankot national highway opens as water level comes down in flood hit J&K

Jammu & Kashmir, Sep 08 (ANI): As water level in flood hit Jammu & Kashmir came down on Monday, the administration opened the Jammu-Pathankot national highway, which connects the region with the rest of the country. Meanwhile, rescue operations are in full swing as the death toll from serious flooding in Jammu and Kashmir climbed to more than 175, with homes, military bases and hospitals inundated in the region. Indian army personnel rescued residents stuck in floodwater in low lying areas in Rajouri district. About 22 air force helicopters and four aircraft were deployed to evacuate stranded people and to deliver relief. Srinagar/ Jammu, Sep 07 (ANI): The worst flooding in Jammu and Kashmir, in the last 60 years, wreaked havoc in Srinagar city on Sunday as residents blamed the state government for not doing much, especially for tourists. Although heavy rains stopped on Saturday afternoon, flood waters rose sharply overnight in Srinagar, a city of 900,000, catching many people living in low-lying areas unawares. About 22 air force helicopters and four aircraft were deployed to evacuate stranded people and to deliver relief. About 120 army units and eight teams of police reservists, equipped with boats and life jackets, were in action.
