Kashmir flood victims await assistance to rebuild homes

Rajouri, Oct 30 (ANI): People continue to live in makeshift tents and are demanding compensation from the government, a month after the worst floods in a century hit Jammu and Kashmir. A resident, Mohammad Kabir, said they were concerned about their safety, especially children, as winters were approaching. Kabir said the government should take immediate measures to rebuild their houses and ensure regular water and power supply. The victims also complained that the government was not paying any heed to their losses and not issuing compensation for the same. Meanwhile, another resident, Haji Mohammad Alam Khan, said due to floods in local Thana Mandi area, 13 people died and with the help of the army restoration work had started. Oct 30, 2014

Pakistani troops resorted to heavy firing in Balakot sector of Mendhar area in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district. The Indian troops guarding the border retaliated effectively. A social worker in Poonch district, Mohammad Zaban, said only a dialogue process can bring peaceful end to this issue. Indian passengers complain of delay in visa by Pak for cross border travel

Poonch, Oct 21 (ANI): Indian passengers who intend to go to Pakistan are compelled to prolong their wait of meeting their beloved ones as the process of granting visit permit clearance from Chakan-da-Bagh border post in Kashmir continues to be delayed. A fresh batch of 32 Indians had crossed over LoC (line of control) towards PoK (Pakistan occupied Kashmir) to see their blood relations. This batch has been allowed to enter PoK after a gap of four months as Pakistan authorities cleared the list of 32 Indians to cross over the disputed border via Poonch Rawalakot bus service. While Poonch is in Kashmir, Rawalkot is in PoK. Several families have been divided and forced to live on either side of the border. Poonch, Oct 17 (ANI): With cross-border shelling by Pakistan continuing unabated, the cross-LoC (Line of Control) trade between Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) is likely to be affected in the coming days. The custodian of cross-LoC trade at Chakan Da Bagh zero point, Mohammad Bashir Lone, said that the Line of Control is a major trade point between both the nations and there has not been direct effect upon trade in Poonch district till now. Products like red chili, cumin, tamarind, bananas, mango, dry dates and dry fruits are exchanged between the two counties. Jammu, Oct 12 (ANI): Officials of paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) are making constant efforts to send back a Pakistani national who had crossed the border mistakenly and was caught in Jammu region. A resident of Lahore, the old man had come towards Indian side to collect some medicines but was caught by BSF personnel in the wake of exchange of gunfire along the de facto border with Pakistan. BSF has been maintaining a high-alert along the India-Pakistan international border following the recent gun shelling. Deputy Inspector General of BSF, BS Kasane, said the old man has been identified as Mohammad Nadeer and has proved to be innocent after intense investigation was conducted against him.
