Visually impaired children make lamps, candles to spread light this Diwali

Varanasi /Guwahati, Oct 22 (ANI): The Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, might be just a medley of sounds for visually impaired but it does not stop them from brightening the lives of other people. In order to bring cheer to their dark world, many visually impaired children have learnt the craft of making lamps and candles to showcase their capabilities and achievements despite the disability. In holy town Varanasi, many visually impaired children have made beautiful and colourful assortment of earthen lamps and candles in various shapes and sizes ahead of Diwali. This empowers the visually impaired and let share the spirit of Diwali with everyone. The children of a school for the visually impaired started the preparations a month back. Meanwhile, in Assam, disabled children part of a non-governmental organization in Guwahati, also made earthen lamps decorated with glitter and painted in fabric colours. Oct 22, 2014

Pistorius sentenced to five years in jail for murdering Steenkamp

New Delhi, Oct 21 (ANI): Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years in jail for shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp dead. Pistorius had shot Steenkamp dead on Valentines Day last year and had maintained that he mistook her for an intruder in his Pretoria home. The double amputee athlete had been earlier cleared of premeditated murder with the judge charging Pistorius of culpable homicide. The defence had demanded that Pistorius be subjected to house arrest on account of his disability but prosecutor Gerrie Nel had argued for a minimum ten years imprisonment, saying that it would be 'shockingly disproportionate' if anything less was given. Woman amputee mountaineer to climb Mount Elbrus, meets Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, July 18 (ANI): India's female amputee mountaineer, Arunima Sinha, and her colleagues on Friday met Home Minister Rajnath Singh before leaving for Russia to climb Mount Elbrus that is 8000 meters above the sea level. Sinha, a national level volleyball player, is country's first woman amputee to scale Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Everest. Singh blessed them to succeed in their efforts, adding she would be an inspiration for millions of specially-abled people. Sinha said that disability is all in the mind. Jul 18, 2014
