Bangladeshi former minister sentenced to death for war crimes

Dhaka, Dec 24 (ANI): A former junior minister in Bangladeshi military government was sentenced to death after war crimes tribunal found him guilty of atrocities during the country's war of independence from Pakistan more than four decades ago. Syed Mohammad Qaisar, 73, was found guilty of 14 out of 16 charges including genocide, rape, extortion, arson and torture committed during the 1971 war, prosecutors said. State prosecutor Tureen Afroz told reporters outside the closely guarded court, after the verdict that wounds of rape are greater than wounds of bullets. Qaisar denied the charges and his lawyer, Syed Mohammad Shahjahan said his client would appeal as he didn't get proper judgment. Pulwama/ Poonch, Dec 24 (ANI): Supporters of People's Democratic Party (PDP) celebrated the party's success in Jammu and Kashmir elections, results of which were announced on Tuesday. The PDP emerged as the single largest party, bagging 28 seats in the 87-member legislature, brightening its chances of forming a coalition government. No party won enough seats to form a government of its own. PDP candidate from Pulwama constituency, Mohammad Khalil Band said that he will work towards development of his constituency. Sarpanch shot dead by militants in Sopore

Sopore, Dec 20 (ANI): A village sarpanch was shot dead by suspected militants in Sopore town of Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district on Saturday. The sarpanch, Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, was shot dead when polling was on for the fifth and final phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Bhat succumbed to his bullet injuries while being shifted to the hospital. An FIR has been registered in the case and investigation has been initiated to identify the culprit. In Jammu and Kashmir, the voting is taking place for 20 assembly seats in border districts of Jammu, Kathua and Rajouri. There are 213 candidates in the fray in this phase. Dec 20, 2014

Sonipat, Dec 13 (ANI): Family members of security personnel who died in the 2001 parliament attack said on Saturday that they were proud of the sacrifice made by him for the country. India is observing the 13th anniversary of the deadly parliament attack, in which 14 people, including five militants, six personnel of Delhi police, and three government staff, died, causing increased tensions between India and Pakistan. Garima Yadav, daughter of JP Yadav, a security personnel who was among those killed in the attack, said her father and others had laid down their lives for the country. Meanwhile, wife of Yadav, Prem Yadav, said India sent a strong message by punishing the attackers. New Delhi said the attackers, who detonated explosives and hurled grenades, belonged to Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba militant groups fighting its rule in Indian Kashmir and had intended to assassinate top political figures. Sarpanch kidnapped and killed in Sopore district

Sopore, Dec 13 (ANI): In yet another gruesome killing of a Sarpanch in Kashmir, the sarpanch belonging to National Conference from Sopore area of Baramulla district was kidnapped and murdered by suspected terrorists on Saturday. According to the reports, unidentified gunmen on Friday evening allegedly kidnapped 62 year old Ghulam Mohammad from his residence in Tarzoo area of Sopore town. Sarpanch's family had lodged a complaint with the police following which a search operation was launched to rescue the kidnapped sarpanch. Police found his body on Saturday morning. Sarpanch's daughter said that at least four masked men had jumped over the compound wall of the house and forced the sarpanch out.
