Kashmiri traders demand compensation for losses incurred during floods

Srinagar, Feb 28 (ANI): Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) staged a protest in Jammu and Kashmir and demanded immediate release of funds as compensation for the losses caused due to floods in September last year. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands of villages were devastated by the worst flooding in decades in the Kashmir valley last year. Due to floods, many shops were damaged and businesses of traders were hampered last year. Protestors carrying placards and shouting slogans, 'We want justice', rallied in Srinagar streets. KTMF President Sadiq Baqal said that they did not receive any relief till date. He further requested the government to listen to their grievances as they have waited far too long for compensation. Kashmir tourism board organizes adventure camp to woo back tourists

Srinagar, Feb 24 (ANI): The tourism board of Jammu and Kashmir, in collaboration with a private institute, has organised a mountaineering camp in the state to woo back tourists and promote adventure tourism in the Valley. Tourism in the state was badly hit in September last year after the state witnessed its worst ever floods in decades. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands of villages were devastated in the floods. Aru valley in Pahalgam, also known as mini-Switzerland, has been a popular destination among foreign tourists for adventure sports. The authorities are putting special focus to develop this region. Aru valley, replete with exotic flora and fauna, is the starting point for various trekking routes including the one to Kolahoi glacier and Sonmarg. Thrill seekers from across India are participating in this camp and learning a range of activities under the supervision of professional trainers. Kashmir valley remained cut off from the rest of the country due to heavy rains, accompanied by snowfall and landslides. Normal life was paralyzed in the state's winter capital Jammu. Residents were angry as the local administration was providing little help to the marooned people. NGO spreads awareness about swine flu in J and K

Srinagar/ Jammu, Feb 21 (ANI): A non-government organization in Jammu and Kashmir on distributed masks and undertook awareness campaign to prevent spread of deadly swine flu in different parts of valley. India has seen a sharp rise in the number of swine flu deaths and reported cases this year. Nearly 700 lives have been claimed in the country due to the deadly disease, prompting officials to investigate the cause and step up efforts to combat the virus. The volunteers are distributing free face masks and literature at places where large gatherings take place. Houseboats are the identity of the world famous Dal Lake attracting tourists from across the world every year. Houseboat owners have called in carpenters who are specialised in repairing boats by using the 'coring' technique. A houseboat owner Taseen Ahmad said they undertake the coring exercise every two years to keep boats in good shape. The coring experts charge rupees 1,000 a day. Coring of boats includes filling of gaps on the floor of the boat with special grass and repairing the damaged portion with expensive timber of the valley known as "deodar". Kashmir dances to its first internet android radio channel

Srinagar, Feb 17 (ANI): The first android-based radio FM channel in Jammu and Kashmir is bringing in more listeners day by day. City FM JK was started in December 2014 by 28-year old mass communication graduate, Tariq Ahmad Salfi, and aimed specifically at the local audience. The radio station in Srinagar operates from a small room equipped with modest equipment like laptops and the odd sound mixer. But days after it was launched, Salfi was informed by his technical team that City FM JK radio waves had even penetrated other countries including the UK., US., Austria and Russia. Salfi has sold his car and invested a lot of his money in his humble project, one he says may be fast becoming at par with radio channels of business tycoons. He says his channel can also be an opportunity for employment in the valley. Despite poor internet connectivity in Kashmir, his local audience has grown; many claim his channel stands apart. Srinagar, Feb 16 (ANI): People in Srinagar city of Jammu and Kashmir thronged markets on Sunday to buy dry vegetables, which are available only during winter season. Locally known as 'Hokshuns', meaning dry vegetables, the indigenously dried and preserved vegetables are part of diet of the people of Kashmir valley during winters. These dry vegetables are in high demand as due to heavy snowfall, roads get blocked and the residents do not get vegetables on regular basis. Vegetables which are dried in summer prove beneficial for the locals during the winters. Some of the vegetables include tomatoes, aubergine, mushroom, garlic, chillies, pumpkins and turnips.
