Jayalalitha declares world chess championship open

Chennai, Nov 08 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha declared the world chess championship open, setting the stage for a clash between chess titans. India's defending world champion, Vishwanathan Anand would take on the Norwegian Challenger Magnus Carlsen, from Saturday. This 12-match series was being organized by FIDE, the world chess federation. Jayalalitha said that an amount of 29 crore rupees has been allotted for the championship. The 43-year-old Indian chess ace, Anand, had dominated the sports and remained a world champion since 2007. 24-year-old Carlsen, on the other hand, was the youngest player to top the world rankings, when he was just 19. Bangalore, Oct 24 (ANI): Legendary singer Manna Dey, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 94, has been cremated in Bangalore's Hebbal crematorium. Dey's body was taken from the hospital to cultural centre Ravindra Kalakshetra, where friends and fans paid their last respects. Dey's was taken to ICU some days ago to be treated for respiratory illness and renal failure. He has been in and out of hospital the last few months and was on dialysis in September. Manna Dey, or Prabodh Chandra Dey, who has given us some of the best songs in the classic era, has a huge fan following across the country.
