Politicos react as govt puts field trials of GM crops on hold

New Delhi, July 30 (ANI): Politicos on Wednesday stated that the Modi government should think in the interest of the farmers and not the foreign firms that would be benefitting from the adaption of the GM crops. Earlier on Tuesday, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar had said that the field trial of 15 genetically modified (GM) crops approved recently by the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) is just a recommendation and no decision has been taken yet on the contentious issue. Apparently, the Modi government is coming under pressure from the RSS, as two outfits linked to the Sangh have now demanded that the Centre put a ban on field trials of the GM crops. Sources said that the outfits have been assured that the government will tread with caution on this issue. Jul 30, 2014
