India proud developer of world's second largest telescope

Hyderabad, June 29 (ANI): World's second largest high-altitude telescope for detecting gamma ray emissions is ready to be transported from Hyderabad to Ladakh, where it will become operational by early 2016. Weighing 180 tonnes and mounted on six wheels, the Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) telescope has been developed and manufactured for the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai by the Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) in Hyderabad. Addressing the audience at the flagging off event, Secretary of Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman of Atomic Commission, R K Sinha, said it gave great pride for India to own this telescope.
