Bangladesh observes 24-hour shutdown in protest of death sentence to Jamaat-e-Islami Chief

Dhaka, Oct 30 (ANI): Dhaka observed a 24-hour general strike on Thursday protesting against the death sentence awarded to the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party chief, Motiur Rahman Nizami, by the Bangladesh war crimes tribunal, as supporters of Jamaat said the government had used the tribunal to weaken its political opponents. However, supporters of Bangladesh's ruling Awami league said they will not allow the call for shut down to be successful. Students of Dhaka University staged a protest and shouted slogans against Jamaat-e-Islami and said Nizami must pay for the war crimes committed by him. Bangladesh's war crimes tribunal sentenced the chief of the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party to death on Wednesday for crimes against humanity, including genocide, torture and rape, during the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan. Srinagar, Oct 30 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leader Yasin Malik's supporters protested against their leader's arrest on Thursday. Malik was reportedly leading a campaign to boycott assembly elections scheduled to be held in Jammu and Kashmir next month, for which he was taken into preventive custody today.The supporters even pelted stones at the police in the city's Maisuma area, after which the police resorted to firing of tear gas shells and a baton charge to disperse the mob.Malik was previously arrested earlier this month, ahead of Eid prayers at Abi Guzar near Lal Chowk while he was preparing to hold an anti-election protest. BJP leaders detained by police in West Bengal's Birbhum District

Birbhum, Oct 30 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders led by Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi were detained on Thursday for defying prohibitory orders in Birbhum District. West Bengal Police later took all BJP leaders, including Kirti Azad in buses to ensure that no untoward incident takes place. They are expected to submit a report about the incident to the central leadership of the party. Earlier this week, three persons were reportedly killed and many injured, and at least five houses were set on fire when the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP supporters fought a gun battle at Makra village in Birbhum District. BJP leader visits Kolkata to assess damage to his partymen in clashes with TMC

Kolkata/Birbhum, Oct 30 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Vice-President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi visited West Bengal on Thursday to assess the killing of party workers allegedly by members of the regional Trinamool Congress (TMC) and called the state government a party of militants, mafias and criminals. Naqvi said that TMC should use their efforts in helping the people there, instead of attacking them. Three persons were killed and many severely injured in a clash between the TMC and BJP supporters at Makra village in Birbhum district in West Bengal. Several houses were also burnt down.
