Navratri begins with religious fervour in India

Bhopal /New Delhi/Lucknow, Ayodhya /Jammu, Sept 25 (ANI): Devotees across India thronged the temples on the first day of Navratri when Hindus worship mother goddess Durga in all her manifestations. Navratri, derived from the ancient Sanskrit words 'nine nights', falls this year from September 25 to October 03. People stood in queues early morning on Thursday as they visited temples to seek the blessings of mother goddess Durga. Devotees celebrate the festival with religious fervour as they pray before the idol of the goddess, sing religious songs and perform aarti while observing fast. During one of the biggest Hindu festival celebrated across India in different forms and names, temples are beautifully decorated with flowers, leaves, petals, lights and the priests ornate idols of goddess Durga with new clothes and jewellery. Meanwhile, a priest at a temple in New Delhi said on the first day of the festival the goddess Durga is worshipped in the form of Shailputri or daughter of king of mountains. Sep 25, 2014

Gifted by Indian President, Bodhi' tree sapling gets place in Vietnam's Presidential palace

Vietnam, Sep 16 (ANI): Invoking "common heritage" with Vietnam, Indian President Pranab Mukherjee gifted an offshoot of the holy 'Bodhi' tree to Vietnam counterpart Truong T?n Sang and planted it in Vietnam's Presidential palace after the two leaders finished delegation-level talks and signed seven pacts. The sapling was carried in a small wooden box as a gift to the country and people of Vietnam. It was procured from the Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) a few days back. India has been traditionally gifting saplings of this gigantic tree to countries it has strong bonds of trust and friendship. Sep 16, 2014

Automatic weather observing system inaugurated in flooded Kashmir

New Delhi, Sep 15 (ANI): Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh inaugurated an automatic weather observing system, which will help forecasting much more accurately and before time than old observation tools, in the flooded Jammu and Kashmir state. Talking about the system, LS Rathore, Director General of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said this new system in Katra, will help visitors know about the weather condition beforehand. A special weather forecast is issued by IMD for Amarnath temple pilgrims during the pilgrimage period and same is made available on the IMD website. Former MP Mahant Avaidyanath passes away after prolonged illness

Gorakhpur, Sep 13 (ANI): Former MP Mahant Avaidyanath, who had been at the forefront of the Ram Temple movement in Ayodhya, passed away in Gorakhpur city of Uttar Pradesh, after battling a prolonged illness for the past few months. Avaidyanath, guru of BJP MP Yogi Adityanath, took his last breath Friday night. He was admitted to the Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon and brought back to Gorakhpur on Friday evening. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the passing away of Avaidyanath. He tweeted saying, "Saddened over the demise of Mahant Avaidyanath ji. Japanese visitors advice residents of Varanasi to keep it clean

Varanasi, Sept 13 (ANI): A group of Japanese tourists visiting the temple city of Varanasi suggested that the collective effort of the residents will help the presently littered city become clean and tidy. This group travelling from Patna to Varanasi felt that the filth in Varanasi needs to be cleared off at once. One of the tourists, Aijwa, travelling with the group, said that the residents should not allow their city to be littered. Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, recently visited Japan and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe. As a part of this MoU, Japan has agreed to work towards the heritage conservation and modernisation of Varanasi. Buddhist temple in Bihar suffers neglect due to government Apathy

Rajgir, Sep 07 (ANI): A Buddhist temple in Rajgir city in Bihar is facing neglect due to apathy of the state government. A handful of tourists who visited the temple urged the concerned authorities to improve the infrastructure so that the historic temple attracts more tourists. Buddhist priests do not travel during monsoon and instead sit in one place to meditate, which is known as "varsavash" or the three month long period when monks remain in their monasteries and elders of the community fast and observe abstinence. According to local folklore, Lord Buddha visited this temple in Rajgir and spent his varsavash. Tourists also said they felt unsafe while visiting the temple as not many visitors come here and the site remains a recluse. Sep 7, 2014
