PM Modi unveils Mahatma Gandhi statue in Brisbane

Brisbane, Nov 16 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday unveiled the statue of iconic freedon fighter Mahatma Gandhi in Brisbane Australia. Modi unveiled the statue even as supporters cheered him and shouted slogans at the Brisbane's Roma Street Parkland. Modi also offered flowers and paid his respect to Gandhi. Former honorary Indian consul in Brisbane Parsram Punj also participated in unveiling of the Gandhi statue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the city. PM Modi is in the Australian city for the 9th G20 summit. The Prime Minister has planned extra events in Brisbane during his four-day visit including the unveiling of the statue, talks with Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, among other events. PM Modi's visit to Australia will hopefully strengthen ties with the near 300,000-strong Indian diaspora in the country, with a friendly tax regime for non-residents and options for dual citizenship on the wish list. AIBA says future bleak for Boxer Sarita Devi, Reactions flow

New Delhi, Nov 13 (ANI): L Sarita Devi's amateur boxing career could be finished after her "unacceptable" behaviour at the Incheon Asian Games where the fighter refused to accept her bronze medal on the podium, said the president of the governing AIBA. Sarita was furious after losing her semi-final to local favourite Park Ji-na in the women's lightweight division. She refused to wear the medal when it was presented to her, taking it only in her hand before trying to drape it over Park. When the presentation was over, Sarita left the medal behind, despite being told to take it with her. Meanwhile, former Indian Sports Minister, MS Gill, said that it was very unfortunate and athletes should respect the judgement. PM Modi pays tributes to Abul Kalam Azad and Acharya Kripalani on their birth anniversary

New Delhi, Nov 11 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tribute to Acharya Jivatram Bhagwandas Kripalani as well as freedom fighter Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on their birth anniversary. Modi tweeted, "Scholar, freedom fighter and a man who devoted his life towards nation building, I salute Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on his birth anniversary". Azad was one of the tallest national leaders of his time and promoted the cause of Hindu Muslim unity as well as secularism and socialism. His contribution to laying the foundation of education in independent India is recognised by celebrating his birthday as "National Education Day" across India. The prime minister also paid tribute to Acharya Kripalani. "Tributes to Acharya Kripalani on his birth anniversary. His ideals and strong commitment to serve the poor continue to inspire," he added. Navy torpedo recovery vessel sinks off Visakhapatnam harbour, rescue operation underway

Visakhapatnam, Nov 07 (ANI): Search and rescue operations are underway as a naval vessel sank outside the Visakhapatnam harbour. One navy personnel was killed and four went missing, while 23 personnel were rescued safely after the Torpedo Recovery Vessel (TRV) A-72 sank on Thursday. The vessel had 28 navy personnel on board. Naval ships and aircrafts including P8I, Dorniers, and Seaking 42 C with night vision capabilities have been deployed for the search and rescue operation. TRV is an auxiliary vessel which is used to recover practice torpedoes fired by fleet ships and submarines. Nov 7, 2014
