Pahalgam, Feb 28 (ANI): In a bid to promote winter destinations and attract tourists in India's northern Jammu and Kashmir province, the state government organised a two-day snow festival in Pahalgam district.Although tourists throng Pahalgam during summers but the provincial government aimed at increased tourist inflow during winters as well through snow festival.The festival initiated a new trend by attracting more tourists. Despite freezing temperatures, rugby players wooed audience.During the snow festival, various winter sports like snow rugby, skiing, snow throwing championship were held.Local residents welcomed this step taken by the tourism department as this will bring tourists to Pahalgam in winter season also, which is also generate employment opportunities. Srinagar, Feb 28 (ANI): People of India's northern Jammu and Kashmir province welcomed spring with mesmerising music festival in Srinagar city. A musical evening was organised by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in Srinagar city, where folk artist Raja Bilal left the audience spellbound with his performances.Kashmir is a land of beauty, camouflage of colours, rich tradition and culture. Bilal enthralled the audience with his own folk compositions which spoke of beauty, colours, nature, culture and tradition of the land. The musical evening truly exemplified the concern and passion of love for humanity without any bias for language, region and religion which have been an integral part of Kashmiri culture. It happens: Dance Festival

Khajuraho, feb 21 (ANI): The world-renowned Dance Festival began in Khajuraho - the city of ancient temples - in India's central province of Madhya Pradesh, with an aim to promote cultural and traditional dances of the country. Dancers performed several old and traditional Indian dance forms like Bharatanatyam and Odissi attempting to keep the dances alive as a part of our heritage. The dancers described their experience of performing in Khajuraho city, a place famous for its temples with exquisite sex sculptures and paintings, a holy one. Many classical artists were honoured at the festival and young dancers got a platform to showcase their talent. The event saw the presence of various provincial leaders including state culture and tourism minister, Surendra Patwa. Many tourists from other countries also made it to the festival to view and participate in it.The week-long event will see classical dancers performing various dance styles including Kuchipudi, Kathak and Manipuri. The festival is also celebrating the exquisiteness and daintiness of human emotions and devout philosophy of Hindu religion. Feb 21, 2014

Moradabad, feb 21 (ANI): The ethnic group of Mishing in India's northeastern province of Assam celebrated a seed sowing festival in which devotees prayed to God Donyi-Polo (the god of Sun-Moon) for a great harvest. Called 'Ali Ai Ligang', it is a spring festival associated with agriculture. A participant said the festival marks the ceremonial start of the paddy sowing. The Mishing community in Assam and northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh pray to God Donyi-Polo for the development. During the festival celebrations, a small area of land is marked to resemble a cultivation field. The land is ploughed with spade and then seeds are sowed from a basket by the member of the community. People dance, sing, and feast during the celebrations, and as a mark of honour people offer fish and eggs to the god. The famous traditional 'Gumrag' dance is also performed during the auspicious occasion by people of all ages within the community. However, people within the community opined that 'Ali Ai Ligang' is slowly disappearing from their society due to impact of westernization. JandK village council leaders hail Rahul Gandhi for 73rd amendment

New Delhi, Feb 18 (ANI): Around 50 village council leaders from Jammu and Kashmir met Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi at his residence in New Delhi and hailed him for getting 73rd amendment of the Constitution approved by the cabinet in the Kashmir valley. The Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference, Shafiq Mir said their struggle for getting the amendment approved has been possible only with the help of Gandhi. Reportedly, the 73rd amendment of the Constitution empowers the Panchayati Raj (village councils), a demand that has been pressed upon by Congress party and Gandhi himself. Equipped with automatic weapons, shoulder rocket launchers, mines and explosives, the Maoists want to cripple economic activity.
