New Delhi, Dec 25 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tribute to Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya on his 153th birth anniversary. Prime Minister Modi took to twitter for extending his wishes. "Tributes to Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya on his birth anniversary. A man ahead of his time, he devoted himself to nationalism and education," tweeted Prime Minister Modi. Respectfully addressed as 'Mahamana', he was an educationist and politician notable for his role in the independence movement and his espousal of Hindu nationalism. Malaviya is most remembered as the founder of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) at Varanasi in 1916, the largest residential university in Asia and one of the largest in the world. He also served as the Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University from 1919-1938. Malaviya had held the position of President of the Indian National Congress on four occasions, 1909, 1913, 1919 and 1932. He left congress in 1934. Yesterday, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and educationist Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya were conferred with the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna. Dec 25, 2014

Bangladeshi former minister sentenced to death for war crimes

Dhaka, Dec 24 (ANI): A former junior minister in Bangladeshi military government was sentenced to death after war crimes tribunal found him guilty of atrocities during the country's war of independence from Pakistan more than four decades ago. Syed Mohammad Qaisar, 73, was found guilty of 14 out of 16 charges including genocide, rape, extortion, arson and torture committed during the 1971 war, prosecutors said. State prosecutor Tureen Afroz told reporters outside the closely guarded court, after the verdict that wounds of rape are greater than wounds of bullets. Qaisar denied the charges and his lawyer, Syed Mohammad Shahjahan said his client would appeal as he didn't get proper judgment. New Delhi, Dec 24 (ANI): Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and DRDO Director General Avinash Chander said that the country has one of the most difficult neighbourhoods in the world. Chander was delivering the 27th Intelligence Bureau Centenary Endowment Lecture 2014 in New Delhi. Addressing a gathering of security experts and Intelligence Bureau (IB) personnel on the subject 'Emerging Technological Challenges for National Security', Chander said security challenges are going beyond traditional domains of land, air and sea as the world is witnessing newer challenges due to the evolution of cyber space, which is both a bane and boon. Before independence, he further said, India was subjugated under foreign rule, whereas 67 years down the road, the country is facing internal and external challenges. Meanwhile, director of IB, Syed Asif Ibrahim, said the scientific and technological capital that we have acquired and accumulated has helped the country immensely in sustaining the overall growth trajectory. New Delhi, Dec 24 (ANI): Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu lauded the Goods and Service Tax (GST) bill presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the parliament during its winter session, saying once implemented the bill will be one of the most far reaching tax reforms since independence. Jaitley had on December 19 tabled GST bill, pressing on with a key piece of reform to replace a myriad range of state taxes. The bill introduced by Jaitley needs the support of two thirds of members of parliament as well as ratification by state legislatures which is expected to happen by the next session of parliament. Meanwhile, Vice-President Hamid Ansari and former Union Minister Ajit Singh paid floral tributes to Chaudhary Charan Singh at his Samadhi 'kisan Ghat". A painting exhibition has been organized at Kisan ghat in memory of the former prime minister. Singh was born in a Jat family in 1902 in village Noorpur of Hapur district in Uttar Pradesh. Dhaka, Dec 23 (ANI): Thousands of people took to Dhaka streets to protest against Bangladesh National Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman for making derogatory remarks against country's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Protesters, mainly freedom fighters of 1971 war of liberation, shouted slogans "down with Tarique Rahman" and "we demand his arrest" and carried flags and banners as they marched through the streets. Tarique Rahman, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, had on December 15, reportedly said that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a 'razakar'-a collaborator with Pakistan occupation army in 1971. First naval establishment in Visakhapatnam 'INS Circars' celebrates platinum jubilee

Visakhapatnam, Dec 13 (ANI): The first naval establishment in Visakhapatnam, INS Circars, marked its platinum jubilee. Visakhapatnam, in Andhra Pradesh was identified by the British as an important convoy assembly point for military operation in 1923. Commanding Officer, INS Circars, Saleem Anwer said a small naval base commissioned in 1939 by the British is celebrating its 75th year of establishment. The establishment became HMIS Circars on April 12, 1942 and post independence the establishment was renamed to INS Circars. Anwer added that the base also extended support in terms of relief and rehabilitation when Visakhapatnam was hit by cyclone Hudhud in October.
