7th annual Tamchon football tournament attracts many spectators in New Delhi

New Delhi, Nov 29 (ANI): The 7th Annual Tamchon Football tournament, a 15-day carnival of football and cultural extravaganza, was inaugurated on November 16 at Dr. Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi. A total of 16 teams comprising of players from different northeastern states are participating in the tournament to promote peace, friendship and unity among the youth of the country. The event has been organized under the aegis of Tanghkul Naga Society Delhi with support from various government and private agencies. During the opening day ceremony, young artists from Tripura performed a harvest dance. Donny J from Assam enthralled the audience with his melodious voice. Later, choreography was also performed by Donny, along with his group. The main attraction on the opening day of the tournament was a match between Zeliangrong Football Club (ZFC) and SSPP (FC). Good skills complimented by intense competition between the teams were witnessed on the ground. Nov 29, 2013

Jorhat, Nov 23 (ANI): 32-year-old Kheiramoni Saikia is a resident of Chetia Gaon, situated on the outskirts of Jorhat district, in upper Assam. She is a mother of two, and could barely meet the needs of the household with the meager income of her husband, who works as a daily wage labourer. However, under the central government’s MGNREGA scheme, she has been provided a job card, through which she gets work as a daily wager in various construction projects. Security forces to take on outlawed GNLA

Meghalaya, Nov 23 (ANI): Last tributes were paid to three personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) killed by suspected cadres of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), along the Indo-Bangladesh border in southwest Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya, on 8th November. The incident is the third major attack reported in the region in which over 14 people have been killed by outlawed GNLA. The attacks are believed to have been in retaliation to the counter insurgency operations launched by the police against the outfit. Carnival showcases culture of the northeastern region in New Delhi

New Delhi, Nov 22 (ANI): Under the theme of "connecting people, celebrating life" a two-day-long Northeast carnival festival was held at the Indira Gandhi National Center for Arts in New Delhi. The event not only showcased the culture and traditions of the region but also aimed to create awareness about the region, its prospects and potentials. The festival was organised by Trend MMS, with support from the eight northeastern states, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of DoNER. As part of the event there were discussions on security, tourism opportunities, employment options and various other issues that affect people of the region. Boxing icon MC Mary Kom from Manipur and star Adil Hussain from Assam attended the event. Jorhat, Nov 06 (ANI): These youngsters from different parts of Assam are all school dropouts, and are a part of a bamboo handicraft workshop recently held in Jorhat.The week-long training programme was organised by the Institution for Culture and Rural Development (I-CARD) at the Rain Forest Research Institute in Sootea. In total 20 people, belonging to extremely poor families participated in the skill development workshop, where they were taught to make different bamboo products. I-CARD has been consistently taking initiatives to impart vocational training to unemployed youths in the region. The Institute works with the Rights Foundation under the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). New Delhi, Nov 05 (ANI): The "Iron Lady of Manipur" Irom Sharmila's hunger strike entered its 14th year on Tuesday. Irom has been on a hunger strike since November 04, 2000 in Manipur's capital Imphal, demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act or AFSPA in the state and other disturbed areas across the country. AFSPA gives troops in conflict areas the right to shoot to kill suspected rebels without fear of possible prosecution and to arrest suspected militants without a warrant. Sharmila's fast began 14years ago, a few days after 10 people were shot in the Malom town in Manipur's Imphal valley, allegedly by the Assam Rifles.
