Agriculture fair begins in Tamil Nadu

Coimbatore, Jan 08 (ANI): A three-day-long agriculture fair showcasing latest farming techniques has begun in state agricultural university of Tamil Nadu. There are more than 300 stalls at the fair, displaying new crop varieties and latest innovations by agricultural research centers from across the four southern India states. The main attraction of the fair is a variety of guava fruit called the Thailand guava -- which weighs up to 60 grams and has less seeds -- developed by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The exhibition is aimed at introducing farmers to technologies like high density planting, precision farming, green house cultivation, farm mechanism, use of solar energy and integrated farm management for increased crop productivity. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu calls for positive use of science & technology

Mumbai, Jan 08 (ANI): Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu called upon the scientist community to invest heavily in research and development for the betterment of society. Addressing the concluding session of the 102nd Indian Science Congress in Mumbai, Prabhu underlined the need for developing new technologies but cautioned against their ill-effects also. Science needs to play a pivotal role in the national mainstream, he added. The theme of the Congress was Science and Technology for Human Development. Delivering the valedictory address, Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Ram Naik said the controversy over claims of scientific advances in ancient India was unnecessary. Naik said ancient Indians had made great advances in astrology, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, architecture, physics and chemistry. Surat, Dec 28 (ANI): Sahajanand Technologies (Pvt) Limited in Gujarat developed laser technology to cut and polish diamonds hoping to increase production and reduce human errors. The firm has developed the latest technology, which cuts and polishes diamonds using a high intensity laser beam. The shape of the diamond is selected on computer based design software. Most of the diamonds are polished by people using microscopes and hand cutters. Chief executive officer of firm, Rahul Gaywala, said that this technology would help Indian diamond industry by providing better production and diamond quality.
