It Happens: World No Tobacco Day

Andhra Pradesh, June 6 (ANI): Internationally renowned sand artist, Sudarshan Patnaik, created an anti- smoking sculptor on sand at a beach in India's eastern Odisha and rallies were organized in southern Andhra Pradesh to create an awareness regarding the horrendous effects of smoking on World No Tobacco Day. World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on May 31 by World Health Organisation (WHO). Patnaik's 5-feet high and 20-feet long sand sculpture, which was made with 7 tons of sand, depicted the harmful effects of tobacco consumption As people gathered to have a glimpse of his artistic message, Patnaik said that his main motive was to inspire smokers to quit the harmful habit. Elsewhere, in Visakhapatnam city of southern Andhra Pradesh, hundreds of people marched with placards and balloons to spread the no-tobacco message. Health Minister's clarion call for students to campaign against tobacco consumption

New Delhi, May 30 (ANI): Health Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan, flagged off a rally of school students in New Delhi on Friday, a day ahead of 'World No Tobacco Day' to draw attention towards the health risks associated with tobacco consumption. The rally was part of the activities taken up by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare along with the WHO, to mark the 'World No Tobacco Day' in order to promote the theme 'Raise taxes on tobacco to reduce tobacco consumption' for this year. Globally, every year, 31st May is observed as World No Tobacco Day. Interacting with participants of the rally, he said that the health ministry is working towards advocating policies that could help reduce tobacco- related health risks and ensuring at the same time that the laws implemented by the state governments are made people friendly. He further added that the rally is organized to spread awareness, especially among students, so that they come forward and campaign against tobacco in India. May 30, 2014
