JandK govt announces 6 months of free ration for flood victims

Rajouri, Sept 23 (ANI): Government of Kashmir will give six months of free ration to the flood victims, said a senior official. Both the Indian and Pakistani sides of the disputed Himalayan region have seen extensive flooding this month, with Srinagar particularly hard hit. Hundreds of people have been killed and tens of thousands are homeless. Authorities say the cost of damage in Jammu and Kashmir may run into billions of dollars. People wait for relief and help as houses have been collapsed by the worst flooding seen in more than a century in the province. There are signs that the relief operation is gaining traction as authorities brought in heavy-duty pumps to evacuate water from low-lying residential areas, including two from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation. Poor remain worst affected in flood-hit Kashmir

Srinagar, Sept 17 (ANI): The worst flooding in Jammu and Kashmir in over a century has left poor and migrant workers the worst hit as they are stranded with no shelter or food. More than 75,000 people were still in partly submerged homes in Srinagar, Kashmir's capital city of more than a million people, where roads have been transformed into stagnant canals strewn with wreckage, trash and dead animals. Many complain that the government, which has maintained a heavy presence in the territory to keep a lid on the revolt, has left them to their fate. Residents stranded for days by the floodwaters said that the army has selectively evacuated tourists and people according to a pre-set priority list, leaving locals to be rescued later by volunteers. Migrant workers and poor people say they are all still struggling for basic amenities like safe drinking water, food packets and blankets. Meanwhile, a migrant worker from northwestern province of Rajasthan who makes brooms to earn a living, Jitesh, said the floods have literally left them with nothing. Sep 17, 2014

A declaration for Independence of Balochistan

Quetta/ Geneva, Sep 08: The largest and resource-rich province of Pakistan, Balochistan, celebrate August 11 as its `Independence Day' and blames Pakistan for its illegal occupation since 1948. Facing poverty, unemployment, illiteracy and inequity, the people in Balochistan feel a deep sense of insecurity and disgruntlement against the Pakistan regime. Human rights violations have reached `epidemic proportions' in the region. On August 11, 2014, Baloch nationalist leaders issued a written declaration demanding Balochistan's independence. The declaration forwarded to the concerned authorities says that Pakistani armed forces have launched a campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide in Balochistan, and are systematically kidnapping, imprisoning and murdering Baloch political activists, students, lawyers, intellectuals and nationalist leaders.
