Centre appeals to militant outfits to shun violence after a police officer killed in Assam

Assam, June 23 (ANI): Nitya Nanda Goswami, the Superintendent of Police, of Hamren police district was leading an operation against the insurgent outfit in remote Rongthang forest area where they came face-to-face with the militants. The police team retaliated and in the ensuing encounter, Goswami and his personal security guard were killed. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi visited Karbi Anglong to pay tribute slain Superintendent of Police and his personal security guard. Their last rights were performed with full state honour. The police force and top officials paid floral tributes and gave them a guard of honor with gun salute. Saddened by the incident, the Kiren Rijiju appealed to militant outfits to give up arms and join the mainstream. Jun 23, 2014

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had sought Assam opinion on the proposal of giving free visa entry to the Bangladeshis below 18 and above 65 years of age, to which Gogoi objected. Guwahati, June 07 (ANI): Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju on Saturday visited Guwahati city in Assam to pay tribute to a Superintendent of Police and a policeman who was killed by a militant outfit. Rijiju, accompanied by state Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, paid homage to the martyr. He visited the state following the directive of Home Minister Rajnath Singh following the killing of the senior officer. The Karbi Peoples' Liberation Tigers (KPLT) militants killed a Superintendent of Police and another policeman in Assam's Karbi Anglong district on Thursday during police action. Ludhiana, June 05 (ANI): Panic gripped Sidhwan Khurd village near Jagraon city on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur highway in Punjab with the recovery of 14 hand grenades and 33 cartridges of AK-47 rifles from a pond during cleaning operations. A police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jagraon city, Naveen Kumar, reached the spot, sealed the area and took the ammunition into its custody. He confirmed that 14 hand grenades and 33 cartridges of AK-47 rifle were found in the village pond.
