Police organise encephalitis awareness campaign in West Bengal

Darjeeling, Aug 6 (ANI): Police in association with health department organised a campaign to spread awareness about Japanese Encephalitis among people in disease-hit West Bengal. Outbreaks of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome and Japanese Encephalitis are common every year in India, especially during the monsoon season, and claim hundreds of lives. But this year, major outbreaks -usually most prevalent in the northern states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar -have spread to regions such as West Bengal and Assam further east and north -killing 568 people.

17 die due to Japanese Encephalitis in Guwahati

Guwahati, Aug 3 (ANI): Seventeen people, including two children, died due to Japanese Encephalitis in Assam and 14 patients more were being diagnosed for the brain fever. Almost 570 people in India have died after contracting encephalitis, commonly known as "brain fever", health authorities said, warning the death toll may rise with more people still at risk. Outbreaks of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome and Japanese Encephalitis are common every year in India, especially during the monsoon season, and claim hundreds of lives. But this year, major outbreaks - usually most prevalent in the northern states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar - have spread to regions such as West Bengal and Assam. Doctors at Guwahati Medical College Hospital said 107 patients have been admitted so far.

Three Maoists nabbed in Jharkhand

Gumla, Aug 02 (ANI): Three Maoists were arrested by police in Gumla district of Jharkhand. The Maoists, belonging to rebel outfit People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), were nabbed in Murmekhla forest area under the Gumla police station limits. Superintendent of Police, Gumla district, Bhim Sen Tuti, said the operation took place after they received secret information from the villagers. The police also recovered three country-made rifles from the house of a resident in that area.

Police suspect an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) the militants planned to plant went off in the house where they had taken shelter. Jorhat hosts national amateur muay-thai kick boxing championship

Jorhat, July 30 (ANI): Around 130 participants from 18 states of the country participated at the 9th National Amateur Muay-Thai kick boxing championship in Jorhat. In the three-day event organized by all Assam amateur Muay Thai and Fair sports Club of India, participants from the age group of 6 to 22 competed in different categories. Muay Thai is a combat sport from the Muay martial arts of Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. The sport is gaining popularity in the northeast where various events are being organized to attract more youth.

Gaurav Gogoi calls for unity within Congress ahead of state by-polls

Guwahati, July 29 (ANI): Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said the party was united and would meet expectations of people in upcoming by-elections in Assam state, denying any dissidence in the party. Speaking to mediapersons in Guwahati, Gogoi said the party must stand united in order to win the upcoming by-elections. The dissidence within the Assam unit of Congress party cropped up after its leaders demanded resignation of chief minister of the state, Tarun Gogoi over poll debacle in general elections held in May. Health Minister Himanta Biswas Sarma, and 33 other Congress party legislatures had resigned demanding a change in leadership. However, Gaurav added that those trying to break party’s unity will not be successful in their efforts.

Army recovers huge cache of arms and ammunitions from militant hideout in Kashmir

Baramulla, July 27 (ANI): Indian security forces busted a militant hideout in Kashmir's Baramulla district and seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the area on Sunday. A joint operation was launched by a branch of Indian army, Rashtriya Rifles, and provincial police after intelligence inputs. During the raid, the security forces seized AK-47, two magazines which consist of 225 rounds, 19 rounds of heavy calibre, 13 UBGL round, one communication set, three Chinese grenade, two rockets, three detonators and various other ammunitions. Recovered arms and ammunition were destroyed soon after the seizure. The restive region has witnessed numerous militant attacks, insurgency, and infiltration attempts from across the border in the last two decades.

Manipur, July 26 (ANI): Yambem Ibohanbi is a progressive farmer in Manipur who has been growing U-Morok, the world_s hottest chilly. In 2012, he set up M/S Global Vegetables at Nungoi Awang Leikai in Imphal east and starts producing saplings to supply it to local farmers.He prepares over 10,000 saplings at his farm and earns over Rs. 1 lakh rupees during the season.Yambem also produce the chilli and send it in the market. U-Marok is mainly used for curries, pickles and chutney. This chilli is also cultivated in parts of Assam, Nagaland and particularly in the hilly areas of the region. Many traders in cities across Manipur, Assam and Nagaland are exporting the processed chilli.

Security forces seize arms and ammunition from militant hideout in Kashmir

Doda, July 24 (ANI): Indian security forces busted a militant hideout in Kashmir_s Doda district and seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the area. A joint operation was launched by a branch of Indian army, Rashtriya Rifles, and state police after intelligence inputs. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mohammed Sharif Chouhan said it was an old militant hideout which was busted. During the raid, the security forces also seized country-made pistol, two country-made guns, PIKA ammunition, grenades and various other ammunitions. One killed and three injured in IED explosion in Goalpara

Goalpara, July 23 (ANI): One person was killed and three others were injured in a blast triggered by suspected militants in Goalpara district of Assam on Wednesday morning. Police say at around 8 am, an IED or Improvised explosive device allegedly planted on a bicycle exploded outside the Krishnai police station. The injured have been taken to hospital where they are being treated.

Assam Students Union protest infiltration of Bangladeshis in state

Guwahati, July 22 (ANI): Various activist groups, including tribal organisations and All Assam Students Union (AASU) staged a protest in Assam against the state government for its inability to stop Bangladeshis infiltrate into the state. The proposal sent by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi___s cabinet to the central government to accommodate Bangladeshis on humanity grounds has not been welcomed by the people of the state. Last week, the state cabinet passed a proposal to grant Indian citizenship to refugees who fled Bangladesh to avoid religious persecution and entered the country after 1971. However, on earlier occasions, Assam government has fought ruling BJP___s ideology to consider Hindu Bangladeshis as refugees coming to India under hard conditions.
