Floods inundate Kaziranga National Park, forest rangers step up security

Golaghat, Aug 19 (ANI): Forest rangers stepped up safety measures in Assam's Kaziranga National Park in a bid to protect the wild life as flood waters from the Brahmaputra River have inundated almost 80 per cent of its area. The park authorities have strengthened security as poachers take advantage of the floods to kill animals, particularly one-horned rhinos. During the floods, the animals stray outside the park. The rhinos and other animals normally go towards the Karbi Anglong Hills looking for higher grounds. However, District Forest Officer of Kaziranga National Park, S K Sill Sarmah said additional safety corridors have been installed in order to keep a strict vigil and safeguard the wild life. Nagaon, Aug 17 (ANI): Incessant rains have worsened the flood situation in Assam as the flood water has submerged around 50 percent of lower areas of the Kaziranga National Park in Nagaon district of the state. Fearing danger for the forest animals that they might get onto the National Highway (NH) if water level rises in the greens, Assam Environment and Forest Minister Rakibul Hussain launched 'Time Card' for vehicles plying from one end to the other of the park on NH 37. Assamese teenager makes her mark in a Hollywood film

Assam, Aug 16 (ANI): Directed by Oscar winning director Jeffery D Brown, the film 'Sold' has received widespread critical acclaim since it opened at the 5th London Indian Film Festival and won an Audience award. The actor in lead role is Niyar Saikia, a girl hailing from Assam. She has played the role of the main protagonist, Lakshmi, a Nepali girl who becomes a victim of human trafficking. Niyar was selected from among 1,000 girls in Nepal and India who had auditioned for the role and had to participate in a workshop to prepare for the role. The 13-year old actor has been gaining appreciation for her sensitive portrayal of a child trafficking victim in the film. A student of class 9, Niyar has been acting since she was a kid and is currently a drama student at the SEAGULL drama institute. She has also done a number of Assamese movies with noted directors like Jahnu Baruah. Her parents are supportive of her career and are proud of her achievements. Aug 16, 2014

Barpeta, Aug 6 (ANI): Three militants of a separatist group, National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), surrendered in Assam. The militants also handed over a cache of arms and ammunition to the police and paramilitary, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Deputy Superintendent of Police of Barpeta Police Station, B C Nath said one AK-56 rifle, one magazine, 17 rounds of ammunition, one 7.6mm pistol and two Chinese grenades were surrendered by the militants.
