Festival promotes cultural heritage of northeast region

Guwahati, Nov 14 (ANI): Be it the Wangla dance of Garos, warrior dance of Nagas or Bihu dance of Assam - the artists at "Discover Northeast Festival" presented the vibrant and varied culture of the Northeast region. Held under the aegis of North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), under the Union Ministry of Culture at Shilpgram in Guwahati, it showcased the culture of eight northeastern states and Rajasthan. One among the major attractions of the event was Dhol-Dholak Cholom and Thang-Ta, the martial arts from Manipur. Artists from Garo community of Meghalaya stole the show with their spectacular display of the Wangala dance. The Sho community of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizo dancers from Mizoram and the Chakma community of Tripura also performed their folk dances. Nov 14, 2014

Wushu player Yumnam Sanathoi Devi makes India proud

Manipur, Nov 10 (ANI): Yumnam Sanathoi Devi is one among the few Wushu players in the country. A resident of Yairipok Top Chingtha village in Thoubal district of Manipur, she won a bronze medal at the recently concluded Incheon Asian Games. Her next targets are to win gold medals at 2015 World Wushu Championship and Rio 2016 Olympics. Sanathoi took up Wushu, a traditional Chinese martial arts in 2003 under the guidance of Maibam Surbala Devi and later under Moirangthem Ibomcha Meitei. She later availed training by the Sports Authority of India. Hailing from a poor family, Sanathoi had to struggle a lot to reach at this stage. Pursuing her graduation, Sanathoi also helps out her family in making clothes in looms during her leisure time. It Happens: Devotees celebrate birth anniversary of Sikh guru

Amritsar, Nov 7 (ANI): Devotees thronged holy Sikh shrine Golden Temple in Amritsar city of India's northern state of Punjab on Thursday to mark the 545th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikh faith. Thousands of regular devotees and pilgrims from far and near converged at the Golden Temple to pay obeisance to the holy book Guru Granth Sahib, light candles and offer prayers for the well being of their families. A devotee, Gurvinder Singh, said people from far off places visit the holy temple to seek blessings for a better future. Fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, was known for his humility, service, and deep devotion. He founded the city of Amritsar and designed the Golden Temple. On this particular day, revered as the most auspicious, devout Sikhs and even others from across the world throng Golden Temple to take holy dip on the occasion of Sikh festival Gurpurab. Meanwhile, in Poonch district of northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, devotees took part in a procession where the youths displayed their capabilities in martial arts.
