Nine dead in Assam floods, over 1200 moved to safer places

Goalpara, Sep 24 (ANI): The flood situation in Assam has remained unchanged for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, with nine bodies being recovered so far from the Goalpara district. The army has been deployed for the rescue and relief operations in addition to squads from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Goalpara Deputy Commissioner said that over one thousand people have been rescued so far and just a few people are now left to be rescued in the district. Around 1,200 marooned people have been shifted to safer places in the Kamrup district, while the rescue operations are on in Kamrup and Morigaon districts. At least 415 villages in 12 districts are reeling under the fury of floods. The continuous downpour since Saturday has also flooded the main roads and various other parts of Guwahati, leading to the closure of schools and colleges. Sep 24, 2014

Meghalaya, Sep 24 (ANI): Eight bodies were pulled out from debris after landslide, triggered by heavy rains, wreaked havoc in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. At least 22 people have died in flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rains in remote northeastern India, in the second flood tragedy to hit the subcontinent this month. Rescue workers said 17 people died in the mountainous state of Meghalaya and five in Guwahati, the biggest city in the region. Authorities have deployed hundreds of rescue workers to the area. Pramod Kumar Tiwari, the head of Assam's Disaster Management Authority, said more than 50 villages were hit by flash floods in the Garo Hills district of Meghalaya. Sep 24, 2014

After Kashmir, flood hits Assam disrupting normal life

Assam, Sept 23 (ANI): After creating havoc and claiming hundreds of lives in Kashmir, flash floods triggered by incessant rains hit Assam. Several districts of Assam, including Baksa, Goalpara and Kamrup are flooded with water, which has disrupted normal life and also brought the transportation system to a collapse. Besides entering into the domesticity, floodwaters also submerged the agricultural lands in these districts. Heavy rains in the neighbouring Garo Hills in Meghalaya have turned the situation serious for the Goalpara district, where around 50,000 people in 12 villages have been affected. Reportedly, a landslide in Goalpara also claimed a child’s life. Incessant rains have also halted the traffic on National Highway 31. Guwahati, Sep 16 (ANI): Union Railway Minister, Sadananda Gowda, on Tuesday (September 16), expressed satisfaction as he reviewed Northeast Frontier Railway in northeastern Assam state. Assam gets first women only university

Jorhat, Sep 12 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, inaugurated first women only university which will include under-graduate as well as post graduate courses. Addressing a function in Jorhat district, Gogoi said the university will help women in gaining expertise in different fields. Professor Doctor KM Bujarbaruah, who is the vice-chancellor of Assam Agricultural University (AAU), would mentor the women university. Till now 19 faculty members have been recruited and 55 students have taken admission. The classes started from September 1 in a temporary building.
