Guwahati, Dec 05 (ANI): Two organisations in Assam- Assam Yuva Parishad (Assam Youth Association) and All Assam Students Union (AASU) - protested against Prime Minister Narendra Modi_s decision on India-Bangladesh land deal issue. Modi, during his recent visit to Assam, had indicated the India-Bangladesh land deal signed by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be moved forward, which means Assam will lose a big chunk of land which is facing stiff opposition by many political parties including regional Assam Gana Parishad (AGP). General Secretary of Assam Yuva Parishad, Mon Kashyap threatened of mass revolution if Modi_s government went ahead with the plan. Foodies satiate taste buds at fest in Assam

Guwahati, Dec 05 (ANI): Food lovers throng annual Mongolian Food Festival, which is organised during the winters, in northeastern Assam state. Organised on the banks of River Brahmaputra, the 10-day long food fest in Guwahati city saw visitors enjoying varieties of food prepared by different tribes. People savoured dishes specific to Assam. Most of the tribes in Assam are of Mongolian origin. Some also have their origins in the Tibeto-Burman and South-East Asian regions. The organisers believe the traditions, culture and food practices of Mongolian-origin tribes are diminishing and such kinds of events will help people in promoting their food items. The tribal foods of the northeast were not that popular five to ten years ago but nowadays they have become an attraction among people. Apart from various delicacies, local rice beer was also served at most of the stalls, which is a traditional delicacy of the region. Agriculture sector in the Northeast to benefit from scientific practices

Assam, Dec 04 (ANI): Endowed with rich natural resources and suitable climatic conditions, the Northeast region provides a perfect environment for the cultivation of vegetables and fruits. While it has huge potential in horticulture production, the region has to depend on other states due to lack of good quality seedlings. In a move to be self-reliant, the first of its kind agri hub nursery was inaugurated at the horticulture farm on Assam Agriculture University campus in Jorhat. It has been developed at a cost of Rs. 15 crores financed under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikash Yojana. The nursery will annually produce 48 lakhs seedlings of various vegetables and seasonal flowers. This new project will give a huge boost to production and ultimately help in generating more income for the farmers. Dec 4, 2014

Jorhat, Dec 2 (ANI): The All Assam Student Union (AASU) on Tuesday protested the Indian government's decision to swap territory with Bangladesh in northeast state of Assam. India has inched closer to settling a long-simmering border dispute with Bangladesh, possibly signaling a softer line from Prime Minister Narendra Modi than when he was in the opposition. A parliamentary committee has urged the government to table a constitutional amendment that would pave the way for a land swap deal that Bangladesh and India have been negotiating for years. Assam and West Bengal urge central govt for scheme on protection of Rhinos

Siliguri, Dec 02 (ANI): India's northeastern and eastern states demanded assistance from central government for protection and conservation of rhinoceros. A programme to create awareness on conservation of rhinoceros was organised in West Bengal which was attended by various conservationists including chairman of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Doctor Bibhab Kumar Talukdar and Chief Conservator of Forests, Ujjal Bhattacherjee. Urging for a scheme for conservation of dwindling species, IUCN chairman Talukdar said last year 41 rhinoceros were killed in Assam. According to the last Rhino census conducted by the state forest department, there are more than 50 rhinoceros in Garumara National Park and more than 200 in Jaldapara, but the number of this unique species is not increasing. Security beefed up in Assam ahead of PM's visit for DGPs conference

Guwahati, Nov 28 (ANI): Security stepped up ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with the police chiefs in Assam. Modi and Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh will address the two-day meet, which begins on Saturday, and being held in Assam for the first time. Directors general of police (DGPs) and inspectors general of police (IGPs) from the states and union territories, chief ministers of the northeastern states, officials from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and paramilitary forces will take part in it. Director General of Police Khagen Sarma said all precautionary measures are being taken to prevent any untoward incident. India's northeast consists of eight states which are beset with militancy and insurgency. Defence Expert hails Army for indicting 9 soldiers in killing of Kashmiri youths in Budgam firing

New Delhi, Nov 27 (ANI): Defence Expert Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Raj Kadyan hailed Indian Army for indicting nine soldiers including a Junior Commissioned Officer of 53 Rashtriya Rifles for killing two youths in Chattergam Chadoora area of Budgam district on November 3. Kadyan said that this shows that Army carries on its work with full dedication and without any bias. He also said that the course of action is to be seen as to what action the Army takes. He also assured that Army will give whatever punishment that should be meted out to them. The army completed its inquiry into the firing incident in which two Kashmiri youths had lost their lives, while two others were injured and found gross violation by the jawans.
