SC to monitor deportation of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants

New Delhi, Dec 17 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed a larger bench to hear petitions challenging a constitutional clause which sought to offer Indian citizenship to Bangladeshi immigrants. Several organisations from Assam have petitioned Supreme Court against Section 6A of the Indian Citizenship Act. This section offers Indian citizenship to Bangladeshis who crossed over to Assam till March 25, 1971. Millions of Bangladeshis crossed over to India during the 1971 Liberation War to escape the atrocities by Pakistani troops. The court also decided to personally monitor the Assam Accord signed in 1985 to screen and deport illegal immigrants. The 29-year-old Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) was signed between the then Indian government and the Assam Movement, which was agitating against the undocumented migrations into Assam. A lawyer representing the petitioners, Manish Goswami, hailed the Supreme Court order. Another lawyer Somiran Sharma said the court also asked the Indian government to hold talks with Bangladesh for the smooth deportation of Bangladehi immigrants. Dec 17, 2014

Tezpur, Dec 17 (ANI): Police arrested two militants of armed separatist outfit National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in Assam. Police was acting on a tip-off when they arrested militants at Kolia Bhomora bridge which is located between Nagaon and Sonitpur districts of the state. Heavy arms and ammunitions were recovered from the two militants, including a woman. Parasar also said preliminary investigation hints the couple was involved in supplying arms and ammunitions to the militant outfit. Dec 17, 2014

Mobile science laboratory proves to be a boon for rural students in Assam

Assam, Dec 15 (ANI): Dahotia Hr. Secondary School in Jorhat is one of the good educational institutes of Assam. However, it lacks modern and state-of-the art science laboratory. Many a times, the students have to sacrifice with the unavailability of practical facilities. Now, the science students have a reason to cheer as they have got a 'laboratory on wheels', a mobile lab inaugurated by state Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on August 15. Mobile lab on wheels is an initiative of Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), Assam in collaboration with UNICEF and the Assam State Technology and Environment Society. As on now, two mobile vans in Jorhat and Kamrup will cover the schools in rural areas of Upper Assam. After the success of these mobile labs, more such vehicles will soon be launched to facilitate all schools in rural Assam. Dec 15, 2014

Huge cache of explosives recovered in Assam

Assam, Dec 7 (ANI): India's paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel recovered a huge quantity of explosives from Bokajan town in Assam. The explosives, including 86 packets of gelatin sticks, 30 packets of detonators, and 286 metres of cable wires, were seized from a bus which was coming from Shillong and was heading to Dimapur. The CRPF has arrested the two drivers of the buses and will conduct the further investigation to find out whether any militant outfit was indulged. Guwahati, Dec 7 (ANI): Assam police arrested a key suspect behind a blast in West Bengal who is also believed to have been involved in a plot to assassinate Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and stage a coup there. Shahnor Alom, who was arrested in a village in Assam, is an operative of a banned Bangladeshi group active in West Bengal, a senior intelligence officer said. According to a police officer, he was caught hiding in his relative's house in a village in Nalbari district of Assam. Director General of Police for Assam, Khagen Sharma, said Alom had a very good rapport with militant leaders from both West Bengal and Bangladesh. Dec 7, 2014

In tandem with the theme – 'Women Entrepreneurship', the Assam Pavilion showcased various entrepreneurial activities of the women of Assam and highlighted the contributions of those who have made a special mark in their respective fields. The various products put up on display at the Fair were Assam Tea, handloom products, Assamese jewellery, bamboo and cane products and ethnic foot items, most of which are led by women entrepreneurs. A large number of crafts persons and entrepreneurs from other northeastern states like Nagaland, Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya also participated in the fair.
