Nation observes 66th Republic Day

New Delhi/ Guwahati/ Bengaluru/ Mumbai/ Patna/ Trivandrum, Jan 26 (ANI): Nation observed 66th Republic Day on Monday under tight security alert. Different states observed the National festival with much vigor as the state chiefs and governors witnessed the parade and hosted national flag in respective states. BJP President hosted the national flag and sang the national anthem at party headquaters in Delhi. Kerala also witnessed the Republic day parade as state Governor P Sathasivam hosted the national flag and saluted the army personnel. Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala also was a part of the parade in the state. The state governor also hosted the national flag and gave respect to the proud Army. Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi also participated in the Republic Day celebrations in Patna city. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi too hosted the national flag in Guwahati. Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao also participated in the celebrations and saluted the proud Indian Army in Mumbai. Jan 26, 2015

Bengaluru police arrests one NDFB militant

Bengaluru, Jan 24 (ANI): One NDFB militant was arrested by Bengaluru police based on information provided by the Assam investigating agencies. Bengaluru Police Commissioner MN Reddi said that the militant was arrested police with the help from Assam intelligence. He added that the militant is an active member of a terrorist cell and had participated in the recent massacre in Assam. He further said that the militant will be handed over to the Assam police. Assam beefs up security ahead of Republic Day

Guwahati, Jan 24 (ANI): Assam tightened security across all its districts ahead of 66th Republic Day. In a sign of growing warmth between the two nations, US President Barack Obama will be the chief guest at this year's Republic Day glitzy parade which showcases country's military might and rich heritage. The preparation for Republic Day, which is celebrated on January 26, is in full swing. Participants including men in uniform and school students carried out rehearsals in dusty ground, while the state is under security blanket and CCTV cameras have been installed in and around the parade ground. Security personnel are carrying out regular checks at railway platforms, tracks and also conducting frisking of vehicles and commuters on road in Guwahati city. As the northeast is home to several separatist revolts, thousands of troops are deployed to prevent any untoward incident. Jadav Payeng develops 1,400 acres of forest area in Assam

Assam, Jan 22 (ANI): Situated along the Brahmaputra River, Jorhat district of Assam is home to the largest river island on earth, Majuli. Located along with a number of barren sandbars, the area was once heavily eroded due to frequent floods. However, with the individual effort of Jadav Payeng, there is now 1,400 acres of lush forest in the area. Since 1979, Payeng has been single-handedly planting and nurturing various species of trees, including vast expanses of bamboo groves. The vast forest is now home to a variety of wildlife species including the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger and a number of migratory birds. Payeng lives in a small hut in the forest along with his family and survives by selling milk. His work has received much appreciation across the country and he was named as the 'Forest Man of India' by the Jawaharlal Nehru University. Police arrest man for smuggling endangered lizards in Assam

Guwahati, Jan 21 (ANI): Police in Assam arrested a man from a railway station in Guwahati city for trying to smuggle 15 gecko lizards. The man identified as Sanjay Rai was trying to smuggle the endangered species to West Bengal, police officials said. He told officials he had caught the geckos from Kumarghat in Tripura and was taking them to Siliguri. Geckos have large international market value and they are transported to China from northeastern states via Nepal. There are many instances where gecko smugglers have been arrested in the city and other parts of the state. Jan 21, 2015

Indian Army arrests 11 tribal guerillas in Assam

Chirang, Jan 20 (ANI): Indian Army arrested 11 militants of banned National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in Assam and recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition from their possession. Militants were apprehended on specific intelligence inputs from the Panbari forest area of Chirang district. Two pistols, two improvised explosive devices (IED) and nine detonators among other arms and ammunition were recovered from the rebels. NDFB is fighting for a separate homeland for indigenous Bodo tribesmen claiming that the tea-growing state has been flooded with outsiders. India has intensified army operations to hunt down tribal militants in Assam after rebels killed at least 80 people last December, the deadliest in the remote area in years. Jan 20, 2015

Allahabad/Varanasi, Jan 16 (ANI): Devout Hindus in India converged on the banks of holy River Ganges on Wednesday to take holy dip to mark harvest festival, ‘Makar Sankranti’. The festival marks the arrival of spring. Large number of devotees gathered in Allahabad and Varanasi cities of Uttar Pradesh to take a dip in River Ganges. The pilgrims camp by the riverside and in the evening they decorate the entire riverbank with earthen oil lamps. The harvest festival is called Lohri in northern India, Pongal in southern Tamil Nadu state and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, whereas in Assam, it is celebrated as Bihu and in the rest of India, it is celebrated as Makar Sankranti. HS Bramha assume charge as Chief Election Commissioner

New Delhi, Jan 16 (ANI): HS Bramha took over as India's new Chief Election Commissioner today. He is succeeding VS Sampath, who demitted office yesterday after nearly six years in the post. Brahma is presently the senior most of the two Election Commissioners. A 1975 batch IAS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, Bramha hails from Assam.
