Indonesia, Dec 26 (ANI): Indonesian official offered floral tributes to the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami on Friday as the region commemorated the 10th anniversary of the disaster. In Siron mass grave, where thousands were killed in the tsunami were buried, Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla and his wife Mufidah led a delegation of a dozen officials who paid their respects to those who died. The 10-meter killer wave, triggered by a 9.1 magnitude earthquake off western Indonesia, wiped out most of the coastal areas in the region, leaving at least 226,000 people dead. Indonesia was the worst hit area with at least 168,000 people dead in Aceh province alone, the closest point to the epicenter. Dec 26, 2014

WHO urges for disaster preparedness ahead of 10th Indian Ocean tsunami anniversary

New Delhi/Nagapattinam, Dec 25 (ANI): The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday called for strong response and preparedness ahead of 10th anniversary of Indian Ocean tsunami. More than 16,279 people in India were killed on the morning of December 26, 2004. A total of 730,000 people in India were displaced and 157,393 buildings and homes damaged or destroyed a decade ago when the enormous waves smashed into the coast. According to government records, India's worst affected district was Nagapattinam, where 6,065 people were killed; more than 200 children were orphaned, while nearly 900 were left with only one parent.
