International agriculture fair held to promote organic farming in the Northeast

Guwahati, March 02 (ANI): The second edition of 'Assam-International Agri-Horticultural' show in Guwahati was an indication of continuous effort to promote modern farming techniques and organic farming in the state. With a participation of 425 stalls from 12 countries and 25 multinational companies, the fair provided an opportunity to state farmers to gain knowledge of global farm technology. The event, organised by the state agriculture department, was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh. The foreign participants displayed their farm technology; organic produce, genetically developed vegetables and medicinal products. Assam's Department of Agriculture also displayed organic products including vegetables, flowers and food grains. Union Budget 2015-16: FM announces more AIIMS, IIT and IIMs

New Delhi, Feb 28 (ANI): Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presented the General Budget for 2015-16 in Lok Sabha on Saturday. Jaitley said that the government is putting scam, scandal and corruption behind it and added the Parliament needs to look into a procurement law. Jaitley proposed to set-up an IT based student financial aid system under the PM Vidya Laxmi scheme to ensure that no student misses out on higher education due to lack of fund. He also proposed to set up All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Himachal and Assam. Keeping in view the need to augment medical services in Bihar, Jaitley proposed to set up another AIIMS like institution in the state. Assam police arrest two Maoists, recover arms

Jorabat, Feb 26 (ANI): Assam Police arrested two suspected Maoists and recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunitions from Jorabat area of Guwahati. According to reports, the police had launched an operation in the area based on intelligence inputs. The arrested, meanwhile, have been identified as Biswajit Sangma and Runa Sangma who were allegedly involved in an illegal arms consignment. One AK-47 rifle with two magazines, 164 rounds of live ammunition of Insas rifle, six rounds AK-47 rifle ammunition and 380 rounds 9 mm pistol ammunition were recovered by the police. Feb 26, 2015

Army assists disabled people by distributing wheelchairs and artificial limbs in JandK

Poonch, Feb 25 (ANI): Indian army assisted disabled people by distributing wheelchairs and artificial limbs in Jammu and Kashmir. The task was carried out by the Romeo Force Regiment 39 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and charitable organisation, Pritam Spiritual Foundation Trust, to help disabled people in the border belt of Poonch district. In November last year, the army had provided artificial legs to 20 people in a distribution camp at its battalion base. Bare-footed jockeys continue with 135-year-old horse race tradition in Assam

Jorhat, Feb 24 (ANI): It is a horse race minus all the trappings of a modern day derby. With no protective gear and no footwear, the participants on untrained horses take part in the race held in the country-side fields in Jorhat district of Assam. The race was originally initiated in 1876 by the British tea planters. Since then it has become an annual event drawing enthusiastic villagers who like derby bet on their favourite horses. Interestingly, jockeys are also allowed to bet on themselves. The race was organized by Jorhat unit of Assam Tea Planters Association (ATPA). Organisers said the idea behind the race was to encourage tea planters' equestrian skills. People from neighbouring districts also come to watch the race. Patna, Feb 22 (ANI): Senior Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Sunday evening. This will be his fourth stint as the Chief Minister. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy at the Raj Bhawan in Patna by Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi attended the ceremony. The ceremony was also attended by Kumar's predecessor, Jitan Ram Manjhi, who had stepped down on Friday after a lengthy battle to hang on to the chief minister's post. Security forces unearth ammunition dump in Kashmir

Doda, Feb 22 (ANI): Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir unearthed an ammunition dump in Doda district. In a joint operation, army and state police stumbled upon an old militant hideout where arms and ammunition were dumped. The police conducted searches at Gandho area following a tip-off and recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition. One AK-47, two 12 bore rifles, one country made pistol besides some explosives were recovered. Doda in Jammu region of the state bore the brunt of militancy in the late eighties.
