Jorhat, Aug 12 (ANI): Students of an Jorhat Engineering College (JEC) in Jorhat city of Assam staged a protest demanding the state government to take back its decision of affiliating their college to the newly formed Assam Science and Technology University (ASTU). Protesting students said the clauses as given by the government were unacceptable and demanded amendment of the same. Few clauses that were unacceptable by the students were provision of excessive power to the central authority (Chancellor), paid membership in the university, political interference in university's affairs, improper fee structure and decision of affiliating autonomous colleges to ASTU. New Delhi, Aug 07 (ANI): The parents of the Delhi gang rape victim welcomed the amendment in the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act on Thursday. The mother of the victim said that the move will send a right message across and that the Juveniles will be afraid of committing such crimes in the future. Further, she also demanded retrial of the convicted juvenile in the Nirbhaya case. The amended bill has the provisions that juvenile convicted for heinous crimes may face a jail term but will not be awarded life sentence or death penalty The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) will decide whether cases where a juvenile is involved in a heinous crime, would be tried under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act or normal trial court. At present, if an accused person is found to be a juvenile or under 18 years, he is tried by the Juvenile Justice Board and if convicted, is sent to a juvenile reform home for a maximum period of three years. New Delhi, Aug 6 (ANI): Congress leader Anand Sharma has said the ruling BJP government must explain why they are in a hurry to introduce the insurance amendment bill. The government was to table the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill in the upper house of the Parliament on Monday (August 04) but it was removed from the business list after they failed to gain cooperation from the opposition in passing the bill. The proposal, which requires the approval of both houses of the Parliament, would bring foreign investment worth up to $2 billion into the sector within a year of its implementation.
