Reactions from political circles flow in as 1984 riots panel favours re-investigation in many cases

New Delhi, Feb 1 (ANI): Days ahead of the Delhi Polls, the Centre is reportedly deciding upon setting up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe those cases which were closed by the police and did not reach courts. While the Congress and the AAP raised doubts over the timing of such revelations by the BJP government, the SAD welcomed the decision. According to reports, government-appointed committee has recommended constitution of a SIT for re-investigation of the 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases. The committee headed by former Supreme Court Judge Justice (retd) GP Mathur has submitted its report to Home Minister Rajnath Singh last week and recommended fresh probe of the anti-Sikh riot cases through a Special Investigation Team, official sources said. New Delhi, Feb 01 (ANI): A delegation of members of Shiromani Akali Dal on Sunday met Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh over 1984 Anti-Sikh Riot Case. The leaders visited Singh demanding justice in the case. Delhi SAD (B) President Manjit Singh said that the home ministry received their recommendation and has said that he will ensure justice in the case. Nation marks Vasant Panchami as devotees throng banks of River Ganges to take holy dip

Allahabad, Jan 24 (ANI): Thousands of devotees thronged Sangam, the confluence of three rivers - Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati- in Allahabad to mark the religious festival Vasant Panchami on Saturday. The festival is celebrated every year in the month of Magh according to the Hindu calendar and is also called as Saraswati Puja or the Basant Festival of Kites for Sikh. The river banks were seen flooded with people who came to take holy dip in sacred river. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings to the people on the occasion of Vasant Panchami. Politicos react as EC censures Kejriwal for poll code violation

New Delhi, Jan 24 (ANI): Political leaders on Saturday react as Election Commission censured AAP Convener Arvind Kejriwal for his reported remarks that BJP was inciting communal riots in parts of Delhi. Terming Kejriwal as an 'anarchist', BJP leader Sambit Patra said that people of Delhi needs administration and not anarchy. GVL Narsimha Rao said that poll panel should take harshest action against the AAP chief. Party's CM Candidate also slammed him and said that she does not believe in such actions. Bhopal gas victims urge US President Obama for justice ahead of his India visit

Bhopal, Jan 24 (ANI): Victims of 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, world's worst industrial disaster, called upon US President Barack Obama to ensure justice for survivors by directing Dow Chemicals to appear for hearings and clean toxic waste. In the early hours of December 3, 1984, around 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas accidentally leaked from a pesticide factory owned by US multinational Union Carbide Corp. and was carried by the wind into the surrounding slums. Social activist Satinath Sarangi said they have called upon Obama and demanded extradition of John Macdonald, secretary of Union Carbide. Court extends police custody of Beant Singh's assassin

Patiala, Jan 23 (ANI): A local court in Patiala city extended police custody of assassin of former Chief Minister of Punjab, Beant Singh. On January 06, Thai police arrested Gurmeet Singh, also known as Jagtar Singh Tara, a former member of the Babbar Khalsa International Sikh separatist group, convicted of involvement in a bomb attack in India two decades ago that killed 18 people, including Beant Singh. Tara's lawyer Baljinder Sodhi critcised the court's decision. Meanwhile, President of Shiromani Akali Dal, Simranjit Singh Mann and his party members protested against the extended police remand and shouted slogans outside the court premises. Tara was jailed for life in 2007 for his involvement in the 1995 attack outside a government complex in Chandigarh city. Jan 23, 2015
