Hindu devotees in Gorakhpur throng markets to prepare for 'Chhath'

Gorakhpur, Oct 28 (ANI): Thousands of Hindu devotees in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh thronged markets to buy the traditional items required to celebrate the Sun God festival, 'Chhath'. A devotee Bimla Mishra said that the festival is very important and is considered extremely auspicious. The Chhath, celebrated on the sixth and seventh day after Diwali, is significant for married women who observe a three-day fast and standing in waist-deep river water, present religious offerings to the Sun God. According to tradition, on the first day, devotees, mostly women, take a dip in the river and begin fasting. Another devotee, Manju Tripathi, said that devotees fast for the fulfillment of their wishes. On the second day, rituals are performed at home. Chhath is considered an extremely auspicious festival by the people of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The festival has also gained popularity in metropolitan cities like Kolkata, Pune and Mumbai, too, where there are large numbers of migrants from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Oct 28, 2014

Centre reveals three names from Black Money list in affidavit to SC

New Delhi, Oct 27 (ANI): The central government on Monday disclosed to the Supreme Court the names of three persons who have allegedly stashed black money abroad. The affidavit which the Centre submitted to the Supreme Court mentioned the names of former Dabur executive Pradip Burman, Rajkot-based bullion trader and jeweller Pankaj Chimanlal Lodhia and Goa miner Radha S Timblo. The list did not feature any politician.Dabur came out with a statement shortly after the Centre filed the affidavit in the Supreme Court. It stated that the account was opened when Pradip Burman was an NRI and was legally allowed to open the account. Oct 27, 2014

Election Commission briefs about voter turnout in Haryana & Maharashtra

New Delhi, Oct 15 (ANI): Election Commission on Wednesday held a press conference and briefed about the assembly elections which were held in Haryana and Maharashtra. ECI deputy election commissioner Sudhir Tripathi said that the voter turnout in Maharashtra till 5 pm was recorded at 54.5%. He added that the voter turnout percentage is likely to be increased upto 62% till voting time ends.
