Sri Lanka elects Maithripala Sirisena as new president

Chennai, Jan 09 (ANI): Opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena has been declared as the new President of Sri Lanka. The soft spoken 63-year-old has vowed to root out corruption and bring constitutional reforms. Sirisena, who will later in the day take oath as the seventh President of Sri Lanka, beat the incumbent Mahinda Rajapaksa after securing 51.28 percent of the votes cast. Meanwhile, President Pranab Mukherjee congratulated Sri Lanka President-elect Maithiripala Sirisena on his poll victory. Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu said that the election process is an internal matter of Sri Lanka and hoped that both Sri Lanka and India share good relations. India and Bangladesh officials discuss border problems

Siliguri, Jan 07 (ANI): India and Bangladesh officials and police discussed border related issues such as human trafficking, illegal arms smuggling, immigration and border management in Siliguri. Indian delegation was led by Barun Roy while Mohammed Jahangeer Kobir led the Bangladeshi delegation. Both the sides would prepare a report which would be submitted to their respective governments that would develop cordial relation between the two countries. A parliamentary committee urged the Indian government to table a constitutional amendment that would pave the way for a land swap deal that Bangladesh and India have been negotiating for years. Congress to move SC against education qualification in Rajasthan panchayat polls

New Delhi, Jan 05 (ANI): The Congress is all set to file a petition in the Supreme Court on Monday against an ordinance brought by the Rajasthan government setting a minimum education qualification for candidates contesting panchayat polls. The ordinance stipulates a minimum education qualification of secondary education (Class X) for candidates contesting zila parishad or panchayat samiti polls and Class VIII pass to be eligible to run for the post of sarpanch. Party leader AM Singhvi and Pradesh Congress Committee president Sachin Pilot claimed that the ordinance is discriminatory and against the constitutional right to equality and highly disruptive for all candidates and political parties.
