Tough time for Kashmir flood victims, still awaiting government compensation and help

Rajouri, Nov 5 (ANI): Victims displaced by the worst floods that hit Kashmir in a century, continue to live in makeshift homes and cry foul as they have not received any compensation for their losses from the government. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands of villages devastated by the worst flooding in decades in the Kashmir valley. Roads in Srinagar, Kashmir's main city were transformed into stagnant canals strewn with wreckage, trash and dead animals. PM Modi announced 5.7 billion rupees in assistance for housing and 1.8 billion rupees to fix six major hospitals in the state that are in poor condition and need immediate central support, according to an earlier government statement. Bhopal gas tragedy victims to start indefinite fast from November 10

Bhopal, Nov 04 (ANI): Victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy would begin an indefinite fast in New Delhi from November 10, pressuring the central government for additional compensation. The Bhopal Gas Tragedy is one of the worst industrial disasters in history. It was 12 a.m. on December 3, 1984 when 40 tonnes of toxic Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, killing thousands and condemning thousands more to chronic illness. Recently, the victims were frustrated on the news of death of Warren Anderson, chief of Union Carbide, who did not face any trial for his crimes. An activist supporting the victims, Rachna Dhingra, said that the government should update the facts and figures of dead and injured victims so that compensation can be taken from Union Carbide Corporation. Half marathon in Visakhapatnam celebrates spirit of people

Visakhapatnam, Nov 02 (ANI): Thousands of people converged in port city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday (November 02) and took part in half marathon organised to salute the spirit of people who showed strength during cyclone Hudhud. Cyclone Hudhud had slammed into the coast of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha last month, killing 41 people and tearing down tens of thousands of mud-and-thatch homes. Meanwhile, the half-marathon, organised by the Indian navy, celebrated the courage of people who rose above the storm and returned to normal lives. Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, Vice Admiral Satish Soni, said that the half marathon marked the spirit of Visakhapatnam, known to locals as Vizag. The funds generated from the run will be used for rehabilitation work and a part of it will also go to an orphanage. The marathon was categorized under 20 km run, 10 km run and five km walk. New Delhi/Mathura, Nov 1 (ANI): Police on Saturday charged lathis at protesting farmers who were demanding compensation for land in Mathura. The farmers had been protesting from a while against the failure of district administration to pay them compensation for their land submerged after construction of Gopal barrage despite several assurances in the past. Police opened fire in the air and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the agitated farmers, who in turn pelted stones and damaged public property. Angry protestors set several vehicles on fire. New Delhi/Noida, Nov 1 (ANI): Politicos reacted on Saturday after the Election Commission asked the Home Ministry to explain its decision to give a fresh compensation of Rs five lakh to the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots considering that the Model Code of Conduct is in force in Delhi because of the upcoming by-polls. Congress leader Rashid Alvi said that the government should give compensation to the victims of all the riots and politics should not be done in this issue. New Delhi/ Ludhiana/ Amritsar, Nov 01 (ANI): A state wide shutdown has been called in Punjab on Saturday, on the 30th anniversary of 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Tainted leader of Congress party, Jagdish Tytler was accused of inciting mobs during the riots in which more than 3000 Sikhs were killed. The violence of 1984 was triggered by the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Earlier on Thursday, the government announced additional compensation of Rs. 5 lakh each to the next of kin of people who died in the massacre. Seeking punishment for the perpetrators of the riots, a protester Dilbagh Singh said the compensation has been provided to the victim families in Delhi only since the elections are approaching there, but what about the 30,000 families in Punjab who equally suffered in the riots. Twelve Maoists surrender in Chhattisgarh

Kanker, Nov 01 (ANI): Twelve Maoists surrendered before the police and paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) in red corridor of Chhattisgarh. Under the rehabilitation policy for Maoists, the district administration will be giving the reward money to the 12 Maoists, who surrendered in Kanker district. The Maoists were carrying reward on their heads and turned themselves before the Superintendent of Police (SP) RN Dash, Inspector General (IG) of Bastar Range SRP Kalluri and IG of BSF and SS Chahar. Reportedly, among the surrendered, Somnath Darro (35), who was working as LOS (local operation squad) commander in Medhki region, was the most dreaded one who was involved in several deadly Maoist attacks. New Delhi, Oct 30 (ANI): In a significant move, Narendra Modi headed government on Thursday announced additional compensation of Rs 5 lakh to kin of 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims. Over 3,000 victims of the 1984 violence, triggered by the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, are likely to benefit from the government's announcement. This announcement comes a day ahead of the 30th anniversary of the 1984 Sikh riots. The order was passed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who took the decision after a high-level meeting where the issue of compensation to civilian victims of communal, terrorist or Naxal violence was discussed.
