Restoration work on in flood-hit Kedarnath

Kedarnath, Dec 30 (ANI): Work is in full swing in temple town of Kedarnath, the epicentre of the worst flooding across Uttarakhand last year, which killed at least 6,000 people. The state authorities have approved a reconstruction and rehabilitation plan for Kedarnath, one of the holiest shrines of the Hindus. It is banking on the recommendations of the Geological Survey of India for planning reconstruction and rehabilitation work at Kedarnath. The institute is also building a helipad of 150 metres by 50 metres, the biggest in the town, to enable Indian Air Force's Mi-26 choppers to carry construction materials and equipments at the sites. But the weather plays truant with construction work gets hampered by the dipping temperatures. It has been decided not to allow any construction activity around the temple, which bore the brunt of the floods. Dec 30, 2014

Five Maoists surrender in Chhattisgarh

Bijapur / Palamu, Dec 30 (ANI): Five Maoists, including two women, surrendered before the police in Chhattisgarh. High-handedness by top brass Maoists, discriminatory treatment, exploitation of women and taking away of their property by troubling villagers have been told as primary reasons behind the move, besides state government's rehabilitation policy for the surrendered Maoists. The women Maoists had a bounty of rupees two lakh each on them. The police have given rupees five thousand to each of the surrendered militant as reward money. Meanwhile, in Palamu district of Jharkhand, police arrested a Maoist of Jharkhand Janmukti Parishad after receiving secret information. He has been booked under several cases, extortion being one of them. As per the police, he had threatened a hospital superintendent for extortion after which he was nabbed as per the laid plan. Bengaluru, Dec 29 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the blast site near a restaurant in Bengaluru, which left a woman dead and three other injured. Siddaramaiah on his visit said that the matter is being investigated. Siddaramaiah even visited the injured at a hospital and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakhs to the family of the woman. Both the victims, one of whom was a woman, were walking past the restaurant when it went off. Tamil Nadu remembers 2004 Tsunami victims on 10th anniversary

Chennai, Dec 26 (ANI): To mark the tenth anniversary of 2004 Tsunami disaster, people in Tamil Nadu on Friday offered prayers for the victims. It was on this day in the year 2004 that the Tsunami devastated Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu claiming more than 6,600 lives. Fishermen in many coastal districts of the state will not be venturing out into the sea today to pay homage to the victims of tsunami. In Nagapattinam, people led by Fisheries Minister KA Jayapal will pay homage to those who lost their lives in the tsunami. In Kanniyakumari, people will pay homage by placing wreaths in tsunami memorial. Meanwhile, people arrived at a church to pay respect to the lost souls. The priest prayed for peace. People also congregated at a grave yard to offer flowers to the dead. Rehabilitation works by central and state governments along with several NGOs had helped to give counseling to the survivors. Ammaponnu lost everybody in her family, except her daughter when the deadly waves swept away their houses and trawlers. With government's compensation money over, she stares at a bleak future. The tsunami killed around 226,000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and nine other countries.
