Nabam Tuki condemns killing over land dispute in Assam

Itanagar, Feb 1 (ANI): A dispute over eviction from encroached land in Sonitpur district in Assam turned violent, killing ten people and inuring 12 others on January 29. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Nabam Tuki, condemned the killings. The Chief Minister directed the chief secretary, the Director General of Police (DGP) and home commissioner to ensure every possible step to defuse the tension. The state government also dispatched teams in the disputed area to take stock of the situation.

Bangladesh HC orders death sentence to 14 in arms smuggling case

Chittagong, Jan 31 (ANI): A Bangladeshi court sentenced 14 people to death, including an Islamist party leader, Indian militant, a former security agency chief and a former deputy government minister for involvement in the country's biggest ever arms smuggling case. Leader of United Liberation Front of Assam, Paresh Barua, was among those who were awarded death penalty. Police seized 10 truck-loads of weapons in a raid on a state-owned jetty in the port city of Chittagong in 2004.

10 killed in Assam firing, locals block Assam-Arunachal Pradesh highway in protest

Sonitpur, Jan 30 (ANI): Locals in Sonitpur district of Assam blocked the National Highway 52 connecting the state with neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh in protest against the killing of 10 people in an alleged land dispute. Ten people were killed and 12 others injured after a dispute over eviction from encroached land in the area turned ugly. The area has been a bone of contention between the two states for decades. An eyewitness, Aakash said there were at least hundred people who attacked the village.

Militants target and kill five non-local bus passengers in Kokrajhar

Assam, Jan 29 (ANI): On the night of January 17, a bus plying from Siliguri to Shillong on NH31 was stopped by cadres of anti-talk faction of NDFB (Songbjit) in Ramfalbil area of Assam's Kokrajhar district. In Taliban style, the militants lined up Hindi speaking passengers and fired on them indiscriminately. Five people were killed on the spot and 3 were seriously injured.

Magh Bihu celebrated in Assam

Guwahati, Jan 13 (ANI): Celebrations of harvest festival Magh Bihu are in full swing in Guwahati city of Assam with fairs being set up. A five day fair from January 9 to January 13 was organized to mark the celebration of the harvest festival. The fair serves as a platform for people to know about their culture and traditional food. Fair organizer Binita Deka said that besides providing a market, people are given fresh food items through this fair, which are often difficult to access. Some of the traditional food items that were prepared include Pitha, Tilar Laru, Sunga Pitha, Tekeli Pitha, rice cakes and coconut sweets. Traditional rice grinder called "Dheki" was also being exhibited during the fair and women were seen grinding rice for rice cake preparations.

Assam, Jan 10 (ANI): Officials in India's northeastern Assam organised a trade fair, an initiative to encourage budding entrepreneurs and craftsmen to boost business and commerce in the province. Small businessmen and craftsmen from across the country assembled at the trade fair held in Jorhat district on Wednesday. Some traders came from neighbouring Bangladesh with the motive of showcasing their local skills in textiles. However, the main attraction at the trade fair was an E-Rickshaw (Tuk-tuk) that operated fully on battery.

Clashes between two militant outfits in Assam's Karbi Anglong displace over a thousand villagers

Assam, Jan 8 (ANI): Some 1,500 people, including women and children, from a dozen villages in Karbi Anglong, have taken shelter in relief camps set up in Shantipur, Silonijan and Chowkihola villages. They were forced to flee their homes after clashes erupted between two militant outfits- the Karbi People's Liberation Tigers (KPLT) and the Rengma Naga Hills Protection Force at Khowani village in Karbi Anglong.
