Residents in Assam deal with flood aftermath

Guwahati, June 28 (ANI): Residents in Assam now face an uphill task in overcoming the adversity of floods that submerged residential areas and forced people to take shelter in relief camps set up by the government. The team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has evacuated nearly 10,000 people. Deputy Commandant of NDRF, Manohar Singh, said on Saturday the people in the region should be careful as there are chances of electrical hazards post floods. Guwahati, June 27 (ANI): Amid the clash of cymbals and blowing of conch shells, saffron-robed Hindu holy men performed mystic rituals to celebrate the annual fertility festival at the revered shrine of Goddess Kamakhya in the northeastern Indian city of Guwahati. The four-day festival also known as 'Ambubachi fair', which began on June 22, is held with the grand arrival of monsoon in Assam. As per Hindu mythology, Kamakhya is one of the most mystical religious sites in India. The festival is based on the belief that during this period the goddess goes through her annual menstrual cycle - symbolizing fertility. The temple has no image of the goddess but a natural underground stream which emanates from a fissure in a rock that symbolizes Lord Shiva's wife Sati. During the time of the festival the water turns red due to iron oxidation resembling menstrual fluids. The main gate of the temple remains closed for the visitors for three days and devotees wait outside the temple till the fourth day, when the temple is opened. The festival is also a major draw for the practitioners of occult with a large number of pot smoking ascetics descending on the shrine, lending a mystic aura to the whole atmosphere. Flash floods in Assam kills at least 6, affect thousands

Guwahati, June 27 (ANI): Flash floods hit five districts in Guwahati city of Assam, killing at least 6 and affecting nearly 30,000 people. Flood has been reported from seven revenue circles and 43 villages in these districts. Cars and other vehicles were seen submerged in water. According to an official release by Assam State Disaster Management Authority, Lakhimpur, Darrang, Sonitpur and Udalguri districts are affected by the Brahmaputra and its tributary Jiabharali. Government to act tough against GNLA militants in Meghalaya

Meghalaya, June 24 (ANI): The Meghalaya police got into a gun battle with GNLA militants in East Garo Hills after busting their camp in Durama forests. The crackdown was launched after two cadres of the militant outfit brutally killed a 32–year–old Garo woman by suspecting her to be a police informer. The Centre has rushed 10 companies of additional paramilitary forces to assist the state police. Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said the Assam-based anti-talk factions of ULFA and NDFB were also active in the Garo Hills and were in cohorts with the GNLA. The government is stressing on strengthening the state's police force to tackle rising terrorism in the Garo Hills. Centre appeals to militant outfits to shun violence after a police officer killed in Assam

Assam, June 23 (ANI): Nitya Nanda Goswami, the Superintendent of Police, of Hamren police district was leading an operation against the insurgent outfit in remote Rongthang forest area where they came face-to-face with the militants. The police team retaliated and in the ensuing encounter, Goswami and his personal security guard were killed. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi visited Karbi Anglong to pay tribute slain Superintendent of Police and his personal security guard. Their last rights were performed with full state honour. The police force and top officials paid floral tributes and gave them a guard of honor with gun salute.
