Residents from different parts of Kochi city participated in a contest organised at a mall where they created ‘pookkalam’ - traditional designs and patterns made on floor by arranging flowers of different varieties and colours - which is followed as a ritual in almost every household of Kerala as part of celebration during the ten-day Onam festival. Kolkata remembers Mother Teresa on her 17th death anniversary

Kolkata, Sep 05 (ANI): Special prayer session was organised by missionaries of charity, the global order of nuns founded by Mother Teresa in Kolkata city on Friday to observe her 17th death anniversary. Mother Teresa was a Nobel Peace Prize-winning nun who died in 1997, and was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2003 at the Vatican. The ethnic Albanian Roman Catholic nun, who dedicated her life to poor, sick and dying in India, had made Kolkata city her home. The Superior General of Missionaries of Charity, Sister Prema said they remember her everyday and draw motivation to achieve what Mother Teresa had dreamed of. PM Narendra Modi visits stem cell research lab in Kyoto

Kyoto, Aug 31 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (August 31) visited the cutting edge stem cell research lab in Kyoto University, during the second day of his Japan visit. Modi met head of institute Nobel laureate Shinya Yamanaka, who won the prize for medicine in 2012. Earlier in the morning, Modi had visited an ancient Buddhist temple with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe. Modi arrived in Japan on Saturday (August 30) seeking to capitalise on his affinity with Abe to strengthen security and business ties on his first major foreign visit since his landslide election victory in May. Commonwealth games medalists felicitated

New Delhi/Imphal, Aug 27 (ANI): Medal winners of the recently concluded Glasgow Commonwealth games were recently felicitated by Ministry of Sports at a function at Vigyan Bhawan in Capital New Delhi. Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju and former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar handed over the memento and prize money to the award winning players. India finished at the 5th position by winning 64 medals. The Manipur government also felicitated the commonwealth games participants from the state in a function at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal. While weightlifting gold medalist Sanjita Khumukcham received Rs.15 Lakh, bronze medal winner in Judo Kalpana Thoudam received Rs.8 lakh. 6 silver medalists- Mirabai Saikhom Chanu in weight lifting, Sushila Likmabam in Judo, Sarita Laishram and Devendro Laishram in boxing and Kangujam Chinglensana and Kotharjit Kadangbam in hockey received Rs 10 lakh each. Young artistes in fields of music, dance and drama conferred in Agartala

Agartala, Aug 24 (ANI): National academy for music, dance and drama - Sangeet Natak Akademi ___ honoured young artistes for showing conspicuous talent in the fields of performing arts. The Akademi conferred awards to artistes belonging to music, dance, theatre, traditional, folk, tribal dance and mime and puppetry in Agartala city of Tripura. Tripura___s Governor, Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya, and Sangeet Natak Akademi Chairperson, Leela Samson, presented the ___Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2012 to 32 young artists from across the country. During the awards ceremony the artistes were given rupees 25,000 cash prize and a citation. Also, to find skillful artists and to support them in numerous ways, the Akademi has set up centres in northeastern regions of Manipur and Assam too. The Akademi has been awarding Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar since 2006. So far, 192 awards have been given to young artists from across the country.
